You know me...well I hope you do...I'm not a big name-dropping goof, but my pal Tom Power (host of CBC Radio's Deep Roots) emailed me last week to alert me of the greatness and subsequent burgeoning popularity of Pathological Lovers in their home province of Newfoundland.
Because I like and trust Tom, I immediately hunted for their page on cbcradio3.com and was surprised to be greeted by a very familiar name among their lineup: Jody Richardson. Name not ringing a bell? Well, perhaps you know of his production work with Mercy, The Sexton. No?
OK, well let's travel back in time a bit. Back to the live music heyday of bands like The Phantoms, or Bourbon Tabernacle Choir, or The Skydiggers. During this period, a band exploded out of Nfld that blazed for the shortest amount of time. They were Thomas Trio & The Red Albino. I saw them live a half-dozen times and their live shows continue to be benchmarks for me.
With Pathological Lovers, Jody Richardson seems to have captured the immediacy and interesting song structure and subject matter coupled with brilliant musicianship and presentation that were the best parts of TT & TRA. No musician wants to live vicariously through past projects, I know. But seeing Jody's name again was just such a treat.
In Tom Power's words "they're exploding" in Newfoundland. Now, let's make it so elsewhere.
