On top of continuing to photograph shows, and get to lots of shows, my big goal is to film my documentarly on the Charlottetown scene.  I'm really looking forward to getting going with it.  I just need $1000 for a camera!

I figure the best way to see a lot of great Canadian Indie bands all at once is to go to SXSW.  I gotta find a place to stay.  Lemme know if anyone has suggestions.

Figure out how to get SOMEONE at the Ness Creek Music Society to get back to me so I can join and get involved with their excellent music festival.

The have this form to fill in on their webpage to become a member but it would seem that nobody actually checks wherever it ends up depositing those forms.

I'd like to get down to Regina this year for the FF. Kicking myself for not going last year, especially when I found out I could've been sitting in the beer garden with Maybe Smth and Grant Lawrence!

Is to get back to Vancouver to see a show or two with my radio3 friends - to see a peformance with others who can enjoy the show with me.

And besides, I look forward to another opportunity to sleep on AlexofAnder's sofa.

I declare to not comment on that. :) Aside from that, I think my musical goal of 2010 is to continue doing interviews with musicians or bands and keep improving on it. As for video a part of the concert, I am doing my best on it. My musical goal is to not buy another record until this time next year, and save money for that throughout the year. Then i can see what albums really stick with me and buy them in one shot. I sort of did that this year and it felt great to go spend a bunch of money on albums that i already know i love. and it keeps mistake albums out of my collection.

We'll definitely have a place for you to crash in Charlottetown!

as 2009 was the year of music, 2010 will be the year of child #2 (10 days to go). nonetheless, i resolve to do the following:

- refrain from sending hate mail to children's performers that haunt my dreams - fred penner, sharon lois and bram I am talking to you. Fred was great at WFF last year, but now Jack is a big fan and Bananafone runs through my nightmares.

- WFF - for 1 day at least

- try to listen to music outside of my comfort zone.

- obtain a CBC siwash like Grant wore on Mamma Yamma last week. Some way, some how... maybe my mom will knit one for me...

I need to find some new bandmates.

nada. same bat laptop, same bat apartment.

-i need to go to more shows. september to the end of november was pretty jam packed for shows, but the rest of the year was pretty quiet. i need to just go to a show and trust the venue to book good music. baba's never lets me down in that respect, any given night they have good music playing. i just need to not be lazy and just GO!

-i need to BUY more music! FIND more music! too often i'll finally listen to a band/artist that everyone has been raving about for MONTHS, and then i'll find out that they've already played here.

-i will start playing the piano again.

-i want to go to the phog lounge. ever since i heard of them during the searchlight, i've really wanted to visit there. which ties into my huge road trip plan to see the west coast, and meet as many r.3'ers as i can. you can buy a via rail pass for a bit over $500 that's good for 30 days. you can get off at any via rail stop as many times as you want.

-which ties into another (non music) related goal: travel by train. i've never been on a train before.

Hillside *does* sound inticing...

@MoniSki, I think Hillside should be on my list of festivals to check out, if we can make it an R3 thing, all the better!

I'm pretty sure that was a nod just for us R3 folks in the know - the ones with kids.  I laughed but my kids didn't know why it was funny.  Excellent acting Mr Lawrence.  Where can we see those performances?  I missed Kathleen Edwards.

6 here in Niagara in a foot-and-a-half of snow last time I was out -- but we have to say the "below zero" part.

I want to host a music radio show. I think it would be great fun! Not sure how I'd ever have time, though. need to start buying lottery tickets

are you getting an error of any sort? is it telling you that it can't connect to the stream, or does it look like it's playing but you're getting no sound?

if it's the second one, then maybe there's something funny with your audio. Have you tried youtube or anything to see if it plays sound?

Hey Grant, Happy New Year @ yourself and your better half...hope it wasn't all work making year end specials. Forgot to catch you on 'On The Coast' yesterday, how was that hired gun gig?

This year in music my goal is to purchase a nice (but affordable) acoustic guitar. Further to that, I also hope to actually play the guitbox with some regularity..I've been strumming around a bit since I got home from my parents place in Ontario and it's been a blast. I figured out how to play Dan Mangan's 'Basket' all by my little ol' self and was pretty pumped (I've always relied on tabs, don't have that great an ear). Last night I dreamed I was playing guitar with Dan at a songwriters circle...you could say that Nice, Nice, Very Nice was the soundtrack to my holidays, my mom loved it.

@babs46 - I listened to all of Mountain Meadows with my mom too, and we had a toe tapping good time, she really enjoyed it, even played it for my dad! Your boys are still getting lots of nice comments about them on the peak too...hope you had a great holiday with all your kids home

Hi Grant et al,

I just wanted to thank you guys for being so approachable and friendly; everyone involved in radio 3 is so lovely.  I "quit" indie for several years because I couldn't stand the snobbery.  Now that I'm back, I guess my resolution is to enjoy the music and ignore the jerks.

and Musicsoop... no worries for sleeping in a tent. (Though it's the best part! if you're a volunteer and it's not raining...) There are hotels you can stay at and there is a shuttles that leaves from the city to the island so you don't have to sleep in a tent :)

For those of you who were on when Craig's show was on... it wasn't an Olympic mascot outside my work but a Peta protesting the seal hunt. I was going to go over there after my lunch and educate them but unfortunately they had dissassembled Sparky (yes, that's really his name) before I was done eating. But the organizer lady came in and was sitting next to me and boy oh boy was I going to give her a piece of my mind and just as I was going to some more people came in and I didn't want to make a scene. Grr... I'm all for freedom of speech but at least be an educated protestor!

As for my answer to the poll question, I've already completed my goal: Got my first ever ticket to the Winnipeg Folk Fest! Now I just have to go and enjoy the show! Otherwise, in general, I'd just like to see more shows and open up my mind even further to different types of music.

Re: Your Via Trip

It should be noted that if you do hop that Via rail train to Windsor, it makes a stop in London before heading down Windsor way. Just sayin'!

But, DO make the trip to the Phog by all means. Windsor is where I spent my university and post university year (yes singular). It is a great city and I can, as well as PhogTom can give you a belly fully of ideas of things to do in that area. Great city!

Kids'CBC

I have the Mamma Yamma / Kds'CBC Jamboree on PVR, and my daughter and I have watched it like 5 times since. She's a huge Jill Barber fan and was beyond delighted to see her on her favourite TV show, in the same 'beautiful boo dress' that she wore when she met her.

But, Grant you'll be happy to know, she's been trained to say "Grant Lawrence" or "Jill's Boyfriend" and gets excited to see you.

For anyone needing a place to stay for WFF this summer, we've got 3 couches I'm sure people can crash on. I'm not camping it this year so we could car pool and I'm only about 10 min away from Bird's Hill Park where WFF is held. You guys should really try to come out, I realized I couldn't afford Jordan and Egypt this summer and opted for WFF because I knew a few R3-ers were thinking of going, so let's make this the best WFF ever!

I see I'm not the only person who's aiming to write some music in 2010.  I'm personally going to take advantage of the fact that I work better with deadlines by attempting FAWM, which is a write-fourteen-songs-in-a-month challenge.  It's sort of vaguely related to NaNo, so quality is not required.

I think FAWM would be more fun (and I would be more likely to finish) if I knew other people doing it.  So here's a challenge: if at least four other regular blog commenters here sign up for FAWM, I will post the results of my FAWM efforts online somewhere, and then you can laugh at me (because I expect said results will be pretty bad).

I'm not too confident in my solo songwriting abilities, I don't think I'd be up for trying a collaboration, especially with someone I only know online.  But if other R3 folks collaborate, I'll happily count them separately towards the four other blog commenters.

ooh, FAWM might be what I need.  but 14 songs in a month sounds insane.  i'm currently at a rate of about 1.2 songs per year.  so I'm a tentative yes... hmmm.  i'll check out the site.  thanks for the heads up!  and it would be good to have some mutual moral support...!

I am currently making my kids old bedroom into a guest room, which I intend to billet out to touring musicians.

As for my music goals: blog about all of the damn shows I go to... and go to more shows, make art between artists at shows (my studio is next door to the main venue in town), and get started on that music project that I have been constantly running through my head.

Me neither.

But I'm lousy at making time to practice, read my music theory book, etc.  So for me, I think FAWM might be the kick in the pants I need.

Like I told Bio Spice above, they don't have to be good songs.

Temperature check....it's 46F (roughly 8C) here in Central Florida, about the same as Vancouver today.  An absolutely gorgeous day.....I went kayaking on the lake behind my house during lunch break today and saw some otters and deer.  Good lunch break....

My musical goals for this year are:

1) Get both my kids to the Magnoliafest up in North Florida. http://magmusic.com/ The Duhks are a perrenial headlining favourite there, and play some great sets with Donna the Buffalo.  It seems that every year something happens; a hurricane, one or the other of the kids has a baseball tournament.....so we've never all got to go at once.  It is a great time.....just a bunch of old hippies, like me, and young hipsters getting it all together.

2) Get to the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee.

3) Make it home to Canada for any music festival featuring the awesome bands I hear here on R3.

4) Receive the toque Grant promised me back on 12/23!!!

Hmmm I must have missed it last time around --  maybe I won on a tweaked question, but I finally get a radio3 toque!  Thanks Grant and co.!

I'm learning electric guitar.  I've played flute and piano in the past, but not well, and I haven't practiced either recently.  I own a harmonica and a penny whistle, but I haven't put much effort into either of them.

@stew72 - I know what you mean...they've gotta have some exclusive stuff though...but always more r3 stuff is appreciated to be able to buy. some tees are available for purchase, as is an R3 toque, but not the sweet hoser one, it's more 'fashionable'. Might I suggest the CBC radio shoulder bag. I got it for Christmas and am very happy with it, already received a few compliments

Can't think of a specific song. It should be something with a big sound though, something classic! Failsafe is a good choice. Maybe a collection of songs by the New Pornographers? That could accommodate a lot of singers and instruments.
