Well, the hospital in Nelson is not unlike a cabin and there are woods around it. I am one of these BC born folks that barely have left the province, I'm getting better but I gotta get away more even if it's just to other provinces. What do you mean by return to my birthplace? I go home to Nelson ever year or so since my parents live there still, It'd be pretty damn hard to get me to move back there though.

To get me to move out of country would be pretty hard, I'd never move to the states but maybe somewhere in Europe. Go back to my roots and move it Italy? I was considering moving to Dublin when they opened a new office there a couple years ago. Still, I'd have to have a pretty sweet job in an awesome city to leave the country and my girlfriend would have to be willing to come with too.

I was born in Calgary. When I was one my family moved to Edmonton where my sister was born.

We then lived in Vernon and Okatoks. When I was three we moved to Thunder Bay (where my father and his family is from) where my two younger brothers were born and I lived there for the next 20+ years.

I now reside in Vancouver, work in Burnaby.

I moved to Richmond, BC at the age of 9 and moved to Vancouver city proper just this past year.

What would get me to move away? I don't know where I'd be going for graduate school, but it'll likely remain in Canada unless I'm offered a good scholarship... the bulk of research in my interested field is in the States, but I can't imagine living down there.

P.S. This Sloan song kind of reminds me of Foo Fighters.

I'm born and raised in Vancouver, and I'll probably stay in Vancouver until I die.  Vancouver is definitely where my heart is and I can't really think of living anywhere else.

I'm hoping to go to Europe for school in September, so I guess that would be the only reason to move out of Canada....but no worries, I'll always come back.

Born in Toronto; moved to Vancouver in '79; currently live in New Westminster.

If I could afford it I would already have acquired a couple of places in some more temperate (and drier) zone than that which is found in Canada.

However, when it comes to actually leaving the country for good? Well, I'm not sure sure, but Gordon Campbell and Stephen Harper's anti-democratic actions and their support of Americanized uber-capitalism sure do tempt me from time-to-time to move somewhere.

Yes, I am one of the few born in the beautiful city (don't plan on leaving either). Raised on Woodwards $1.49 days and Christmas displays, Whitespot Pirate Packs, the PNE coaster, the Kitsilano Boat Show, Expo 86, seeing ET for the first time at the Park Cinema, Cypress ski trips, playing on the swings and at the ZOO (yes, they used to have penguins and polar bears and stuff) at Stanley Park, all that jazz!

Here are my answers to your questions, Grant. 

I was born in San Mateo, California, 16 miles south of San Francisco on the Peninsula, the same birthplace as my father, and in the same location of his family was and still is.  At the age of 9, we moved away, and we never returned to the Bay Area to live again.  I have returned to my childhood house to see it, but never to live in the area.

What would it take to get me to move to Canada?  Believe me, it’s a tempting thought, and has been for years.  I’d always wanted, after visiting in 1977, to return to the Maritimes to live for six months or so.  Just to experience some place different than the American West, but not that different.  Now those feelings are greatly compounded as I now have friends stretched from BC to NS.  Besides, if I went to Canada, odds are at least someone would recognize my CBC Radio3 scarf.  But to get me to go there, either an incredible job – or wealth so I could go and move and not have to worry about money. 

But if there was any other place on earth I could live other than the States, it would be Canada.  However, I’m not sure just where in Canada!

If you aren't a Canadian, what would it take for you to move here?  Every time I'm in Toronto I want to move there.  But I think it's like New York City where you gotta make a ton of money to have a really cool place?  Felt pretty much the same about Vancouver last time I was there.  If the Ceeb is hiring Americans and paying them a ton of money any time soon let me know.  I know ProTools.  Does that help?

I was born in Theodore, Sask. and lived there until a year and a half ago when I made the big move to Vancouver. I lived in Costa Rica for one year of my life and absolutley loved it. I sometimes think about living abroad again and I think I will eventually. I love Canada so much and am very content to stay.

Born on the Mainland in BC (not going to say the town as I dont need any teasing), grew up on Vancouver Island in Parksville.  Sweet little boring town.  Moved to Victoria when I graduated high school.  Then to Vancouver for a few years.

I am back on Vancouver Island raising my son in Qualicum, which is like 10 minutes from Parksville.  I never thought I would be back here.  It is a great place to raise kids.

I could not picture myself ever living abroad, or even in a different province!  BC is beautiful. I'm blessed.

I went "heh" when I read your "first gen Canadians" comment! Mainly because my Côté ancestor landed here -- more specifically at what's now Québec City -- in 1634.

Job/or money.  From the US, it has to be sponsored for work, marry into it, or it's a 2 year process which also involves having $10,000.  Chicago's a great town but like Lee, Canada is tempting to me too.  it would be strange, i think.  i say i need a job that requires me to travel between the two:)

5) Have you ever returned to your birthplace? folks have been back a couple times but i've never gotten closer than SEA/TAC.

St. Catharines? Me too! Though like you, and most people I know my age, I moved away. Only I went to Toronto instead.

I also was back there for the Holiday season! Mmm Christmas rain.

As for what would get me out of Canada? Some kind of mass Canadian migration, cause I only want to surround myself with Canadian people for the rest of my life.

I can't get as far back as you can, but can trace myself back to the birth of a Hower in the Colonies in 1775.

Wow.  Those are EXACTLY what I need.

I'm not bad at skating, it's just that my hockey buddies skate laps around me.  It all comes down to practice, and I hate being on the ice if my feet are all cut up and bleeding.  Although I'm currently reading Theoren Fleury's book, and according to him, he woulda played through that no problem.  He even played on a "knee held together by ligaments, freezing, and cocaine" (I summarized that quote myself)

Then again, he also says he's the greatest hockey player not named Wayne Gretzky and that the reason the Flames are in Calgary are all thanks to him.  Um.... yeah Theo.  Yeah.

I was born and raised just outside of Salmon Arm, BC in the community of Tappen.  I moved to Vancouver when I was 18 to go to UBC and also lived in Montreal for a short portion of my degree.

The past few years I've been somewhat of a nomad- living between Vancouver, Montreal, Santa Cruz (California) and on the road.  I'm currently living in Santa Cruz for work, but was just home to BC for a few weeks over Christmas.  California is beautiful, but Vancouver takes it.  I've traveled a lot and whenever I finally plan to settle it will definitely be in Vancouver... someday!

I was born, raised and still live in Winnipeg. I've considered moving out of Canada for work related reasons. I'm currently finishing up my BA in Politcal Studies and then want to do a MA in Conflict Resolution and Peace Studies, and since my Poli Sci background is more international based, I'd like to move somewhere to do work that I'm interested in, especially if that were Northern Ireland. I'm also thinking about applying to the foreign service to try living elsewhere, gaining some experience, but still be surounded by other Canadians (at least at work).

@ Cam (7) - If I read that right, I take it you're the eldest of 4 kids too? Also, for those blisters I'd recommend taping the area with hockey tape. I have to try it, but according to a friend it works wonders on blister proned feet.

I was born and raised in Calgary and I've never lived anywhere else! I do plan to live somewhere else (hopefully abroad) at some point soon, and maybe relocate to Vancouver some day since my boyfriend is from the west coast and I love it out there too. 

MattyJames - Are you enjoying that book? I was kind of intrigued by it when it first came out but I'm wondering if that was just because of all of the hype...

@boders: re: your anecdote, in all my Canadian lit courses we discuss in depth about how Canada is greatly defined by its perceived lack of identity. Despite that, any immigrant moving here will feel out of place, especially if they'd been a part of a coherent majority from their home nation.

I seriously considered New Zealand during last winter. I was even looking at their categories for immigration. IT is an occupation where there are identified shortages, so it's not out of the question

i was born n' raised in portugal and immigrated to vancouver in 1999--- coming from a small fishing village of about 300 people, you can imagine what it was like moving to a metro city on the other side of the world.

i have to say that canada is hands down one of the very best and beautiful places in the world to live, despite my whining about the weather (rain). that being said, i still believe in the virtues of travel and living abroad not only for a change of scenery and to grow, but i feel that having travelled extensively i've really come to appreciate and realize how lucky we are to call this place home!

i did.  great show--tho it didn't end up being the whole band.  Just Mr. Wilson & Ray Farrugia the drummer. They were in a great groove & the sound was amazing.  probably the 2nd best show of them i've seen.  i understand the 2 nights at the Blacksheep were pretty amazing too.

sorry we didnt meet up.  i'll keep my eyes on the schedule.  let me know if anything good pops up over there.  it makes for a nice little weekend.  i have friends pretty close to there in Ohio & it's a good excuse to visit them.

I was born in Goose Bay, Labrador.  As a child moved to Newfoundland, then eventually, Oakville, Ontario.  I hated Oakville and cried every night for my parents to send me back to Newfoundland!

Now, I consider Toronto to be where i'm from...it's what I call home to anyone who asks.  However, I've been moving around quite a bit, lived in Japan for 3 years, Australia for 1.5 and have spent the last 2.5 years in England.

But, where ever I go, and the more I travel, I realise just how wonderful Canada really is...there is just something about it that is nice and gives me warm fuzzies...I might not be done travelling yet, but I know I can imagine settling anywhere but Canada.

I (along with keydive and rocknrollloser) will most likely be going to two shows this weekend!

I was born in Calgary, lived there until I was 19 and then moved 2 hours south to Lethbridge. To be honest I've travelled all over Alberta and I love the praries, but only in the summer. I'm not a fan of -40 as -50 with the windchill.

I love Canada. I love not paying for healthcare. I love cheaper tuition for students. But I do not love the weather.

Anything that promises sunshine and no worries about my car starting and I'm there!

@Brenda - ahh, the neverending discussion about what constitutes 'being Canadian'..i think having that conversation itself is essentially Canadian. My point was just that this country (like most/all depending on your time scale) is dependent/built on immigrants. On the whole I am proud of Canada's history of immigration, although we have many dark spots in the past (head tax, turning away of the St. Louis, etc..) Thanks to Lester B. Pearson (who only ever led a minority government!) for opening up our immigration policies in the 60's; we are infinitely better for it.

Answers to Grants Questions

1. I was born in Regina during a blizzard in the middle of may (Only in Canada) that day Dad spent most of that day digging calves out of the pasture because they were buried under a heavy wet snow. 

2. Sadly I no longer live where I was born and miss it greatly. But sometimes you gotta do your own thing and for me that is climbing backpacking and hiking which is not really doable from home.

3. For me to move out of country it would take a lot this whole country is my home and I'm almost always proud of it. I could be swayed to go live overseas for a designated time period but I could not see myself leaving for good.

4. I go back home as often as I can which at present is about 3-4 times a year.

It's pretty sweet, but waaaaaaay harder than it sounds.  Keep in mind there's no right or wrong when it comes to music.  Unless it's really really wrong and then it's funny.  Also, you gotta spend a lot of time talking to people who don't know how to talk about music.

I was born and raised in the Tomato capital of Canada. (No, even with the "small-town" vibe, I didn't know Lana Gay and it's a real shame 'cause she seems like a lovely gal I could be best friends with.)  

I moved from my hometown with my parents at the age of 17.  From there I lived in Chatham, Brantford, and Lindsay for college.  After graduating, I moved myself to Vancouver which quickly felt like "home" to me.  But, life took me to the state of Missouri, USA for a few years, until I moved back to Canada, settling in Kitchener, ON.... I LOVE it here and will most likely stay here the rest of my life.  Not my birthplace, but closer than where I was. ;)

That's what I remembering being told is how our cultural identity works right? A mosiac of cultures where as our neighbours are known as the melting pot. Like you guys have said, our identity is almost the lack there of, the embracing of multiple cultures of everyone who's immigrated coupled with some Canadianism. What with all those people who characterize us as being overly polite and courteous.

Wonder why people would think that you have to be born in Canada to be a real Canadian, we're such a young country that we still need immigration (which I agree should be easier)

That's what I always thought the deal was.  Ethnic groups in Canada were encouraged to hang on to their traditions while those in the US are encouraged to blend in.

I was born in Antigonish, NS.  I moved to Truro, NS, to go to Nova Scotia Teacher's College.  A year after graduating, I moved to Vanderhoof, BC to take a teaching job.  Two tears later, I moved to Banff, AB, where I lived for 2.5 years.  I moved to Chia-yi, Tawain, mainly to get out of debt and to finally live a dream of living overseas.  I stayed in Taiwan for 3 years, and then spent the next 1.5 years backpacking throughout Southeast Asia and Canada.  I ran out of money while volunteering in Thailand, so I made my way to Beijing, China, to teach for a year.  I finally got exhausted of living overseas, and moved back to Canada four years ago.  I moved back to Antigonish, where I met my husband, who came all the way from India to study.  We moved to Kamloops, BC, where we got married.  Now, we are living in Edmonton, and dreaming of more travels abroad.

@Alex, Cam, MusicSoop:  My sisters and I were three of the very few Asians in elementary school.  We were also in the French Immersion program, so the Asian kids population was even more sparse.  I actually used to be so embarassed by my Chinese middle name because didn't have a regular Western name like all of my friends.  I got over that, but it was always interesting growing up in Canada with my Asian heritage/traditions.

@Cam:  I definitely want to see the lights!!!  Should be a neat show.

yet again i was walking around downtown plugged into my iphone, so no blogging! i'm finally home and missed the last trivia question by mere minutes!! (yes, i could have called on my iphone.. but it's awkward, and i don't like talking on the phone while traffic is zooming by)

as for your poll question: i was born & raised in charlottetown, pei! i moved to halifax for a smidge over a year, and came back.

would i ever live in another country? it's not completely out of the question. i think it would take a lucrative offer to lure me away from this amazing country, or one hell of a promised journey. i'd love to visit other countries. many friends have gone back-packing in europe, and one is currently wandering around the himalayas. crazy!!

after coming back from halifax, i decided that my heart will forever be in charlottetown, that i am a traveler, not a mover.

however, recently i've been re-evaluating that. there are very few (paying!) jobs here for me.. (freelance entertainment photographer...) all of the interesting jobs seem to be in toronto, montreal, or vancouver! i know that wherever i DO move to, must have water. growing up on an island, it is disorienting to be somewhere that's land-locked. i feel very boxed in and generally uneasy.

re: embarrassment over a non "western" name. I wonder if  your friends even noticed. I say that because, my brothers and I all went to a K-6 school that had 150 kids when I went (50 now) living in a mostly white neighbourhood. Well one day my parents were talking about something and said someone was black. My youngest brother was like, "black? What do you mean black?" And they responded, "You know, black, like Lucas (his best friend)." "Lucas is black?!?"

I think he was 9 or 10 at the time. It's wonderful that kids are so oblivious to that kind of stuff.

re: Theoren's book.

I wouldn't say it's the best biography I've ever read (Ron Jeremy wins that one), but it's definitely not the worst or even the cockiest (what gives, Paul Molitor?).  That being said, I'm 200 pages in and I can't really put it down.

My advice though: feel free to skip chapters at will.  Anything important he will remind you a dozen times later on in the book.  A lot of his hockey stories are just a vessel for him to pad his index and give guys nicknames.  Also, take everything he says with a grain of salt.  Being from Moose Jaw, he was always a hockey hero to me... but I didn't ever think he was as good as he thinks he is.

Like the new ones, just because the old ones were so long and these ones are shorter.
