I really like the short list/long list style of voting. Seems to keep it very exciting.

Well we've already touched on where to buy music, and live shows... so I'm kind of drawing a blank on the next searchlight.  Best Live Band could be a very interesting debate, but that doesn't really factor in to a "community" per say.

how about: Best Canadian Music Festival.

(Early prediction: Dawson City wins. I've never been, but I'd sure love to!)

Let all the up and coming artists map out where they should be hoping to play across the country.

Sure, it's not as cool as a venue or record store.  But someone must be developing ticket systems that don't involve ridiculous fees.  And I'd like to see them get some publicity.

Or maybe I'm just bitter because I considered buying a $28 ticket to see Vampire Weekend, but decided against it when I learned it would cost me $35.  I seem to have a mental block against ticket prices over $30.  Still might talk myself into it, if it doesn't sell out before I make up my mind.

I have no idea on what the 3rd Searchlight would be. I'll just sit back and read the response. :) Oh yea, i played The Log Driver's Waltz on my radio show this morning and it sure brought good memories. :)

How about the best campus radio station?

I think best festival would be a good one, there is definitely no shortage of those in this country.  Another idea is best gig poster art?  I have a wall of them that is contiually growing(see profile pic), and there's some real good ones out there.

if it were best festival, wouldn't the WFF have the most mass appeal? I really have no idea, but I am assuming it is the leader attendance wise as far as festivals go..

What about best tour?

That could be interesting.  There'd have to be some rules like, at least X amount of provinces covered, opening act(s) being Canadian as well, and obviously how much fun people have at the shows.  Hopefully, it'd cut down on the bias of where a band is from.  Then they could do a one-off re enactment of that tour to be recorded on the air!

Rob's a really nice guy, I interviewed him for an nxew.ca article I did on their showcase back in September.  I'm hoping to write some articles this weekend, as well as start shooting footage for my documentary!  Busy weekend, and it starts tonight with the opening of the exhibit for our Art For Music show at The Guild.  Very exciting!

best local music community - can showcase many aspects of a city. Bands, inter-band collaborations, venues, promoters, outfits like backstage vancouver and so forth...

haha, was just gonna say as much. I guess, as Max explained, some people are put off by the name 'Hugo Chavez' itself..how that helps discussion and the transmission of info is beyond me, but that's the way she goes i guess..

How about Best Live Canadian Performer?

Some bands are great at putting out CDs, others are legendary for their live performances. You know, the ones that you see and then tell 10 friends "You have to see this band live."

This is a bit of a repeat from the TCNH discussion, but:

From reading the iTunes store terms of service, I think "explicit" might be short for "possibly objectionable to some," rather than "has swear words."

Don't know how songs get the explicit label, though.

I ask how many of us out there have the most amazing musician grandparents? I think there is an increadible amout of tallent and history hidden accross the country, just waiting to be recorded! Radio 3 and it's listeners could be the perfect way to bring the music to all of Canada.

I use that a lot! Must be in the bloodlines. My ancestors settled in PEI in 1830, but moved out to the Prairie in the 60's (1860's, that is)

Give your head a shake isn't a PEI ism. It's a pretty common phrase from what I know. I've been hearing it in BC since I was a kid.

things to do while in pei:

-go to cedars. order a shawarma. (or anything lebanese..) if you don't eat meat, then a falafel. (i've been a veggie for years and still crave their shawarma..) or you can go upstairs to baba's, chat with the wicked bar staff & order from the exact same menu. the whole building is family owned.

-if you like veggie sushi, formosa tea house is great. also, if you like specialty teas, they are great for that, too. actually... any of the little asian tea/snack places are all pretty delish. they keep weird hours though, & sometimes close unexpectedly for a day or so.

-if people try to tell you where to go for greasy breakfast, don't listen to them. charlottetown fails the big fail whale when it comes to breakfast. i make a better breakfast times a million at home. ugh. although, martin once suggested st. james gate. i haven't tried it, yet. so maybe listen to martin.

-churchill arms for curry dishes. (and tuesday awesome trivia, but you probably won't be here..)

-china garden has the best chinese food in town i think?

-the beach you mentioned last week is fine (i forget which, ross lane?). i think that's the one between stanhope & dalvay by the sea, if so has been over run by tourists for years so has lost some of it's charm. i think almost any north shore beach on pei is still pretty spectacular though, all things considering. i am partial to greenwhich (st. peters bay), but i grew up there. the national park is out there, but the BEST spot, with the biggest dunes (not confirmed) is about a half hour/45 minute walk down. (i know a shortcut hee hee). beaches in the winter aren't as amazing as summer, though. i wish you were here in the summer!

-there's no frenchies, they closed awhile ago. it was a pretty sad day. there's still a froggies though!

-if you ask for directions it will likely be in the form of "go down that way and turn left where that building burnt down there 10 years ago and just hang your next right where that huge tree used to be and it's 3 doors down next to where that store closed down."

-farmers market saturday morning. the omelet guy makes amazing food, but you'll be waiting for 45 minutes. even if you just order toast. ok so that's another "greasy breakfast" place that's good. maybe charlottetown doesn't fail as badly as i think it does in that respect...

-i heard there's a sweet art show at the arts guild featuring 9 island artists (4 of which are nominated for visual artist of the year!) so that should be a good time. winkwinknudgenudge

Any time i've taken a vacation elsewhere and i use it, i generally get weird looks, so just made an assumption, my bad ;)

Blog: The PEI-isms discussion reminds me of last week's vintage slang discussion, when I championed "tough beans."  I wasn't quite sure that was the phrase I was thinking of, but it seemed close.  Upon further reflection, I was trying to remember the much more awesome "cool beans."

Cool Beans! nice..I love when Creed says that in The Office.

My favourite vintage phrasing (not sure if it's slang) is "If I had my druthers"

Not sure if it is a good idea but honestly, one band can't represent Canada. But a nightly four act battle royal cage match across Canada would be a great way for new bands a fighting chance in peak physical condition.

i saw your message well after craig's show was over. the art show gallery thing has the big reception/grand opening thing this evening! i'm pretty excited (and really nervous!!!). i am dying my hair for the occasion! grant gets here on friday. although, he mentioned that a couple of times already... so you probably know that already...

nope! I do have a funny high school drama story though! I picked it up from To Kill A Mockingbird. Atticus says it when he's called on to shot the rabid dog in the middle of the street. He notes that his druthers would be a different gun...then proceeds to show his shooting prowess. This books would be with me forever on it's own, but it really helps that I had an amazing teacher in Grade 10 guiding me through it.

Googling the problem indicates that it may be possible to use userscripts in Chrome, but it looks complicated and I know nothing about it.  Plus I haven't tested mine in Chrome at all.

ooh! are we getting into sayings, now? Parents are good sources of those. I've been working on resurrecting a few of my dad's, now that I'm getting older. I use some of them on my kids, but some are just good for practicing becoming a grouchy old man, like:

and my personal favourite

didn't know whether to shit or steal third (which is a variation that is unique to my dad - as far as I can tell - of "didn't know whether to shit or get off the pot")

I don't normally resort to that, but not using the real saying would just water things down, like when Spiccoli calls Mr. Hand a "fuzzy nerd" in the TV-censored version of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, or, as I mentioned on TCNH, the line from James' song Laid: "she only hums when she's on top"

I never took a drama class in my life. In OAC (now defunct 'Gr 13' program in Ontario) I had a spare during the period most of my friends had drama. As the semester moved on I found myself hanging out most spares in the drama class. When Three Musketeers (one of my favourite books) was chosen as the big year end production, I was called into service to build the set. It was great fun. I'll have to get pictures from that uploaded. Further to that, a friend and I who built the set together also played a pair of dandies on stage during scene changes. The artist in our group painted a huge mural of a Parisian street in perspective; we did slapstick, such as walking into the painting...apparently we were a big hit

The fabulous drama teacher awarded me with a credit with a final mark of 80%. I was able to use this credit to drop out a 77 from another course and that bumped up my average enough to get some $'s out of the scholarship from Lakehead Univ.

How about an R3 themed touring festival to go across the country, comprised of one band of each province voted on by us, and maybe a few wild cards, picked by CBC.  And the winner of the Polaris headlines. 

Obviously this is too late to get going for this summer (probably), but could be an EPIC 2011 Searchlight contest.

...think about it.  Especially with all the pull Grant has, you know it'd be a guaranteed sell out at every stop.  Just figuring out logistics would be a nightmare.

Grant, in your interview you just had with Matt McQuaid, it was brought up that he used to be with the PEI band, The Rude Mechanicals.  I have heard of one of the songs by that band that I thought was pretty good.  Can you play it?  "Headin' out of Town".
