Hey everyone, happy Monday. I was in Calgary on the weekend playing at the CJSW 25th Anniversary Party. What an amazing night.  I’ll tell you more about it.

Meantime, let’s get vocal about vocals. I bought a copy of Paste Magazine for the flight out to Calgary on the weekend particularly because there was an article on Tom Waits in it. I’m a long time fan of the songwriter and storyteller.

So it always surprises me when I meet someone who says: I really don’t GET Tom Waits. Okay, okay, everyone’s entitled to their opinion but…er…well, I don’t think we can be friends. What many people seem to complain about is the voice. They don’t like the voice.

I’ve heard similar complaints when it comes to Leonard Cohen, Neil Young and Bob Dylan. People declare: they can't sing! Now what some call “bad voices” is what I’d prefer to call “voices with character” and personally, I’ll take character over technique any day.

On today’s show, we’ll explore the vocal timbre of our Canadian Indie artists. And we want to hear from you on this all request Monday.

WHAT VOICES DO YOU LOVE AND WHY? What voices drive you nuts? Are there voices you once didn’t like but now love? What song do you want to hear?

From the Paste article on Tom Waits:

It’s as if the perennially ornery songwriter has played the ultimate prank on Father Time. “You’re going to try and take my voice away someday, huh?” he seems to say. “Well I already took it myself.”
