I stumbled across this band last October when I was researching my Indie Music Muses on War podcast. I searched "afghanistan canadian musicians" and a band called Blackie Jackett Jr. came up. One listen and I knew we'd be musical friends for life. (No surprise, you know I'm your country girl here at Radio 3.
This is a band that's yet another example of how punk rockers grow up to be cowboys...or cowgirls in my case. I was never so much a punk rocker, but I did spend my 90s (the decade, not the age) in Regina's clubs soaking up alternative rock like Glueleg, Moist, Watchmen, and Finger Eleven. Of those only Finger Eleven is still kickin', that I'm aware, and yes, two of the members grew up to moonlight as cowboys.
Blackie Jackett Jr. is the side project of James Black and Rick Jackett, erstwhile guitarists for alt. rockers Finger Eleven. It was F11 that went to Afghanistan, so that's how this story unfolded.
I frickin' love this song...I don't use that word liberally. To all of you out there who are stuck in the cycle of a malfunctioning relationship...
Blackie Jackett Jr. and I (along with Sandra D. on this number) give you: Stuck in Rewind.
