I'm not necessarily road-tripping there, but my sister and I are heading up from Halifax to Montreal to see Osheaga at the end of the month, can't wait for that.

When I'm actually driving though, I just plug in my Zune and listen to whatever fits my mood at the time.

For me, roadtrip songs have to be upbeat. It's all about bombing down the highway with the windows down, singing along to fun songs. In that light one newish song that's caught my ear that I think would be perfect for a roadtrip song is by The Bicycles, Won't She Be Surprised.

It's hard not to want to sing along to the "aha.... oh yeahhhhhh" reprise, and try to sit still against your seatbelt during the funky tune.

Ahhhhh summer. Looking forward to the roadtrip mix tape!

i had to do a lot of driving between cities recently and it was a battle between the new metric and the first sam roberts.

and i always prepare my mp3 player so that i can listen to that spirit of the west tune as i am getting home.

I'll be road tripping to Vancouver at the end of the month and intend to do up one hullva road trip mix.

I think one of my favourite all time road trip songs is "Dead End" by Sam Roberts

My 2009 road trip song is still up in the air...though I'm thinking the Japandriods will hold up well in the car.

I will definitely be road tripping to near Dover Island, near Halifax this summer. I'm hoping to make a number of trips, and will definitely be playing Radio 3 friendly CD's. I don't have any mp3 hookups, so CD's are the way to go for me, and I tend to listen to full albums.

as for road trips it depends who I'm with, I've got a pretty big variety on the Ipod so I can usually compromise with someone.

If I'm flying solo it'll probably be a mix of Lil Wayne, Jay Z, Kanye, T.I., MIA, Ghostface Killah, stuff like that..... then I never have to worry about falling asleep at the wheel

I use an old cheap mp3 player that takes SD cards.
I usually load that baby up with as much as possible, from some CBC podcasts, to my favourite indie bands and some more mainstream stuff. I add a few Radiolab podcasts too.
I like to start it out slow and get progressively heavier, especially if I am hitting the road first thing in the morning.
So I start out with the Acorn and work my way up to NoFX.

My band and I just had a long road trip to Toronto...we almost always hook up our ipods. We all have very different stuff inside, mine is lots of Canadian music, Jeff is lots of old, funk albums, Johnny is a bit of everything lots of RnB, and Andrew has a mix of stuff. There was a LOT of Maxwell, Prince and MJ played on the trip.

The CBC Roadtrip podcast is a highlight of my summer. My ideal vacation is hitting the Transcanada with an iPod and a double double at my fingertips - I wish I had radio 3 in 2002 as I drove across BC, from the tip of Tofino, Van City, the Okanagan and through the Rockies into Calgary. This year I plan to leave Toronto behind me as I roadtrip the festival circuit from Hillside to Wolfe Island and Osheaga in Montreal.

3 songs that jump to mind for the roadtrip are
"The Magician (Camilo) - Said The Whale
"Through & Through & Through" - Joel Plaskett (little influenced by the Maritima road tripping video)
"Don't Haunt This Place" - Rural Alberta Advantage

I stock my mp3 player full of good tunes. Like most have said it's fast-paced, toe-tapping, sing your lungs out kind of music. However, I do include the mellower tunes. You never know what the mood in the vehicle will be all the time, so might as well prepare.

One song I really like for roadtrips is Canadian Motorcycle Gangs by Hawksley Workman.

the songs have to match the weather for me. like if im coasting down a toronto highway in summer, i want to hear something light and acusitc. Broken Social Scene sometimes fit into that along with Vampire Weekend and The Hush Sound. If im out in the middle of a long stretch of highway in winter, i want to hear some more colder sounding music. i want to hear sharp and percise with a little bit of echo on the vocals. Bloc Party, Peter Bjorn and John and White Lies fit into that category

the roadtrip mix tape is the highlight of my summer too! though it may come a close second to my wedding this year. nah. it always seems to come out right before i go camping! this year we're heading to Wolfe Island, and I'll be spinning Luc Doucet, 100 Dollars, deep Dark Woods and of course "Rollin Rollin Rollin" from good ol Joely P.

When I have long driving mixes, I like to punctuate with instrumentals. It used to be Shadowy Men and Huevos Rancheros.
They'll still be in there, but what's new?

Yah, the first Sam Roberts seems to always be perfect - put it on as we're leaving town almost everytime.

It's all about the ipods on a road-trip, it's nice to listen to full albums, because how often do you really have time to sit down and pay attention to a whole album? But if you're feeling extra perky, the on-th-go play lists are always good for a laugh.

(if you're like us and also have lots of comedy on your pod, like mitch hedburg and daniel tosh mixed in with a few tunes from the Pick of Destiny....)

I find that often my roadtrips involve going to a show of some sort, and I usually want to play something associated to the band playing or the city I'm visiting.

When I went to Chicago for Lollapalooza a few years ago we played Sufjan Stevens as we came in and we played all our favorite artists from the lineup on the way there (BSS, Stars, Feist, etc...) I also find that I download a bunch of old radio3 and NPR podcasts so I can listen to a variety of music on the road (I don't have satellite radio).

This summer I'm unfortunately stuck in Sudbury, finishing up my thesis. I wish I were heading out to Bluesfest with my friends this weekend, but alas, work comes first. That being said, there will be one short road trip to the River & Sky festival in a couple of weeks. I'm already planning on playing some Julie Doiron, Attack in Black and $100 (all of whom will be there!).

It all depends where you are going...

The stuff that I remember from roadtrips specifically are surf music mixes traveling to Tofino...it's only appropriate.

...aside from that it's mostly whatever was in the CD case.

You should ask Said The Whale...they've always got something interesting, and have been driving and camping for the last few days! (they're playing in winnipeg tonight with The Zolas)...

This past weekend, I drove from Montreal to Brooklyn, NYC for the 4th of July.

I really wish the roadtrip mixtape was already out because on the way there we dodged crabby border guards, had a flat tire on the NY thruway at 1:30am, got lost in New Jersey at 4am, and finally drove over the Brooklyn Bridge with the sunrise.

I should also mention I did this in 10 hours without switching drivers, and without a map.

I could've used some Metric, Matt Mays, Two Hours Traffic, Malajube, Hey Rosetta! and Sam Roberts. My ipod died around the 3:30am mark.

anything by The Band makes a PERFECT companion while driving anywhere in Canada.

I don't think there's anything more Canadian than listening to "Acadian Driftwood" on some random stretch of highway

I love this question seeing as I recently returned from a roadtrip from Saskatoon to Jasper. On the roadtrip my dear friend and I rotated hours for who picked the music. For my hours we listened to Tom Petty (roadtrip essentials), the sing for your song podcast, born ruffians, said the whale, jenn grant, two hours traffic, Hey Rosetta!, Mother Mother, and several other podcasts. For my friend's turn we listened to Hawksley workman, Joel plaskett, Jason Collett, Cadence weapon, ectera... It was bliss as we both LOVE Canadian music and I got him hooked on the podcasts, while he made me listen to Canadian bands (such as Hawksley workman) that I tend not to listen to...

Those are some of what I would call my favourite roadtrip tunes!

I'm curious, what kind of stuff do you listen to for surf music?

I know usually when I'm heading out to my spots, I put on some slower-building stuff, then the closer I get, I'll play some upbeat tunes to get me pumped.

Hands down my all time favorite roadtrip song is "gimme shelter" by the stones.

HOWEVER my vote for MixTape 09' is going to be Faerie Dance by Plants and Animals, i just love driving to that song and listning to the progression from slow and melodic to an upbeat sing-a-long.

I do love "dont haunt this place' by the RAA as well....

im thinking of pulling a runner, ditching the office and hitting the pavement now!!!!!

For reallllllly long drives, I like to listen to an artist's discography in order just to see how they have evolved.

I last did that with the Hold Steady's 4 albums and I'm still trying to figure out the storyline! Too many damn characters and pills and powders and killer parties to keep track of. I should really try and write it all out.

I have had my big road trip of the summer 5000km down to Utah. Listened to a lot of United Steel Workers of Montreal, Elliot Brood, Metric, Stars, Hey Rosetta, and Winter Gloves. I have one more road trip to Brandon planned for a Wedding in August so I think I might have to make a new playlist for that trip. Hoping for some good weather too so I can do the trip with the top on the Jeep down and the music blaring.

I went into this at great lengths on NxEW but the short version. I am not a fan of some of the stuff on the Polaris list, but neither am I going to slag any of it. I recognize that everyone on the list worked their butts off to get where they are, and each of them rounded up enough votes from the 180 jurors to get on the list. With very few exceptions (Nickleback, Neil Young, Rush ... ) there is no one in Canadian music who couldn't legitimately use an extra $20 thousand and from what I've seen and the people I know in Canadian music - if they don't NEED the money they will do something good with it - free shows, donations to charity, produce albums for others etc.,

NxEW has it's own top 20 now, just to recognize some other good stuff (and recognition is about all they'll get) and I'm pretty happy with that list too. I don't see the need to tear down anyone on the Polaris list in order to promote the things I like.

The drive is only about 6 hours (plus 20 minutes in the boat) - so it's not that huge. But then there are ten days and nights of almost total quiet - there are occasional boats but the biggest noisemakers are the wind and the loons (and the dog chasing chipmunks). It's my annual recharge of the batteries and I get to listen to a ton of stuff and contemplate what I want to do over the next year (and come home with the energy to do it.)

...my other suggestions for roadtrips are sing-a-long songs/music.
Robots -Dan Mangan and Camilo - Said The Whale (you're right Grant... force of habit, starting to call it that now)(I've actually seen him do this magic act... its mind blowing).
Could you play one of those...to appease me after the WCO on the playlist...

I'm leaving for a road trip to the Dawson City Music Festival in 6 days. I have a box of Gravol, clean underwear, and a new Ipod filled with music and podcasts. I'm hoping to catch up on a lot of Radio 3 podcasts that I've missed and start listening to This American Life. My co-worker is making me a mix-cd of garage rock songs for the big trip.

I need some upbeat, sing-along songs for my roadtripin' mixes. Matt Mays, Danny Michel, Joel Plaskett's rock-ier stuff and hey rosetta! are all favourites. The last roadtrip I went on David Myles' "Cape Breton" was also on repeat.

And though it's not much of a roadtrip (more like a 5 minute bike ride!), I am heading out to the Ottawa Bluesfest soon. 11 days and nights of live music, it's definite aural overload!

As a Canadian I don't hate success, but neither I guess do I participate in it beyond a certain level. I like small venues and I'm most interested in bands when they are starting out - checking to see, who they are and what they bring to the table I guess.

Beyond a certain level - I may still like their new CD and I may buy it but I probably won't go to their shows anymore. It doesn't mean that I hate them by any stretch, that's just not where my interest usually lies - I'm also more likely to write about bands that are just starting out or are still flying under the radar (certainly with exceptions to that).

I don't think my attitude or interest though is representative of Canadians - Nickleback and Celine Dion are still the biggest selling artists in Canada. On an annual basis Rush and Neil Young probably still sell more albums than Metric or Joel Plaskett.

I agree. It's so much harder to feel like you're connected to the band when they're playing in a hockey arena.

Outside of a select few, it seems like most bands that get popular do so on their worst record and continually get worse. I know Kings of Leon aren't canadian, but man they used to be good. Now they're HUGE but their new stuff doesn't even hold a candle to their first album. I guess I'm just touching on the "sell out" factor.

Not that I hate popular artists, because I really don't care about hype or any of that BS, but I just always hope that artist's don't let popularity get to their head too much.

It's not so much the 'sell out' factor or even 'feeling connected' it's more - I'm more comfortable in one of my fav. local pubs than I am at the Molson Amphetheatre or the Air Canada Centre and I like to see what a band can do running on nothing but creativity: What music did they come up with the drove them to find a stage for it, what did they do to make their album sound good despite having almost no budget to produce it ... It's not that I don't appreciate bigger albums but it's not what gets me out to shows.

Speaking of all of this, I decided the other day that the people who complain about Canada's obsession with the guitar spend too much time in the city. Go sit on a deck on a lake in northern Ontario and try to listen to Crystal Castles or even Thunderheist, it just doesn't work.

Don't get me wrong, I love cities - especially mine but most of Canada is big empty spaces and guitars just sound good in big empty spaces.

I think I mentioned on the Best Live Show blog my distaste for the whole Cowbell show and weird merch table.
Had I heard their music before I saw them live it might have been different...

A great road trip is one where you just get in and go so any preparation is impossible. For me the best road trip tunes come from AM radio stations playing oldies, 800 CHAB out of the friendly city in Southern Sask.

Maybe it's because my first car was an 82 Plymoth with only an AM radio but I love to hear Neil Young, Joni Mitchell or Gorden Lightfoot while driving across the prairie.

Justin, many of those songs are favourites of mine, Library Voices, Apostle of Hustle, The Acorn, Andrew Vincent, AMGC....Go Back Home should only be played at top volume in the car.

Though this summer's only roadrip is an eco-friendly train ride to Osheaga, I have done many the cross country trip. Usually I make a good playlist, and that's 'the' playlist for the trip. Often it's one song that rules the trip, the one I listen to on repeat. Once I get hooked, I have trouble changing the playlist and listening to something new.

I adore the roadrip mixtape podcasts. Last year's was my favourite...Matt Mays, Sam Roberts...spent much of last summer on the road, and hearing the podcast again brings back fond memories.

The current car playlist includes the songs that feel like summer: Camilo (THE song of the summer, will start every car trip...), Stuck for the Summer - 2 Hrs Traffic, Geographic Centre of Canada - The Wheat Pool, Tell You Twice - Wil, I Live A Lot of Places - Woodpigeon, Dollar Signs - Snailhouse, Cannot Get Started - Handsome Furs, I'll Bring the Sun - Jason Collett, Postcard From Princess - NQ Arbuckle and Flood - The Acorn.

I hope this year's is not as, um, gross?, as last year's. The ipod connection in my car does not allow me to skip through chapters in podcasts, and I think I can repeat the getting pulled over twice story verbatim even a year later....
