That we have (my wife and then 7 month old daughter) had my picture taken with the Six String Nation Guitar and its one of my happiest pictures to this day.

Mostly cause it's the same guitar that was used to record a song that I often sang along to with my daughter in those early months of figuring out who each other was, in Justin Rutledge's live version of Jellybean.

Make sure you get Jowi to talk about that wicked cool triangular (pick shaped) coin they've made.

1. Can you please play me either "Foxes mate for Life" or "Little Garcon" by the Born Ruffians? I haven't heard anything by them in ages.

2. If you were to play international indie music I'd expect the likes of Lykke Li, Vampire Weekend, The White Stripes, Andrew Bird, Bon Iver, miniature tigers, the morning benders, Santogold, Sea wolf, She and Him, ...etc *(not all of those are necessarily 'indie', but they are awesome.)

Haha, for a moment there I was wondering where that White Stripes song was playing. I was all, "Shoot, did I open up another window or something, jeeze!" Then I realized it was coming from the CBC Radio 3 player. Still hasn't sunk in yet.

I love the idea of a Canadian only playlist for radio 3 but, honestly, I'm getting sick of hearing the same songs by the same artists over and over again. it's begining to sound like a commercial free, indy, version of the commercial radio stations. I listen while working during the day and, particularly in the morning (EST) segments, hear the exact same songs over and over. So, maybe just mix it up and play some different songs from Canadian artists. Rant over.

1. I saw the Dears in Edmonton on Wednesday, with Jets Overhead, who are touring with them. I wasn't familiar with Jets Overhead before Wednesday, so I was pretty much blown away by them, because they are awesome. I'd love to hear "I Should Be Born" from their new album, "No Nations".

2. Joan Jett. In fact, anything from Blackheart Records - I also love The Dollyrots, The Eyeliners, and Girl In A Coma.

Wow, I've never actually heard the cover of Walking With A Ghost. I think it was better for it to be a mystery, that was like nails on a chalkboard. I guess I've been reminded why I stopped listening to the White Stripes a long time ago.

I want to hear True Patriot Love by JP (sorry TheRadioHead, just feels fitting).

I inching away even from my standpoint of being okay with an exception of one or two artists per hosted show if you guys feel it really adds to the show or is important to the Canadian music scene. Still, an exception of one song per three hours that doesn't need to be exercised doesn't seem terrible. Please don't play that cover again though.

not a fan of the idea of playing international acts. there are thousands of places i can go to listen to those artists. this is the only place to hear our own tunes.

I'd like to Request some "The Racoons" (they play tonight at Richards on Richards) AND Dan Mangan's Robots.

As for playing international artists, I have full faith that Radio3 would blend them in with the Canadian music we have come to love.
Songs chosen would not stick out like a sore thumb, nor would they take anything away from the CanCon in regular rotation.
People just don't like change. Everyone flipped out when Facebook made their massive changes and here were are a few months later and everyone has forgotten/become used to it.
I see no harm in playing two songs an hour from related topics, with complimentary sounds or new international indie artists.
Who knows what might come of it, but I think it Radio3's take on what songs would be played might be interesting.

He is a recently graduated Mount Allison student and he is making his way across Canada on his first tour- I think he might be in Ottawa today. I always get "On My Way Out" stuck in my head, s that is what I recommend for the radio3 listening audience.

I do agree with pman1978, I get tired of R3 songs getting heavy rotation, but instead of injecting non-Canadian artists, why not just just play a greater variety of Canadian indie artists? (older, less played cuts, etc.)

All these other "international" bands being suggested, I know where to hear them, if I wanted to. I'm forced to hear them in my car because I don't have Sirius and an alternative. I'm here because I know I can hear what I love.

Did that make sense?

1. After taking a spontaneous road trip from halifax to fredericton on saturday to see a show at the capital, anything from glory glory man united or jon epworth would be appreciated.

2. No interest in hearing non-canadian content. I think diluting r3 with music from acts not likley to tour in canada would be a mistake.

Mixing up the Canadian songs! I agree with one of the previous posters, it seems like the playlist goes a little heavy on the same few songs.

I'd like to hear Contrived 'Angels Rioting Against the Nothing' - 'Not a Goodbye' is played all the time, time for something new. Or maybe some older Wolf Parade, 'I'll Believe in Anything'?

1) Since R3 apparently has plenty of air time and not enough music to fill it how about some Kim Barlow, StavelEy Project, Weird Weather, Charlie Glasspool and the Big Love, Dance Yourself to Death, Dog is Blue, Elbow Beach Surf Club, Fjord Rowboat, Jill Zmud, Tonka & Puma, Fishwives, Broken Bricks, Spring Breakup, Mary Steward and Save September (I can give you more if you still need them.)

2) None thanks, most U.S. stuff is overplayed everywhere else. Same with U.K. stuff and I really don't care very much about Peaches Berlin influences.

Playing international artists will not help the heavy rotation problem. It is not a problem of the quantity of available artists and songs, it's a problem of coordination and possibly other influences I am not aware of. I've been really trying to fight this misconception that playing international artists will help cut down the repetition.

I'm going to detract me being okay with an exception as much as I wouldn't mind hearing a little Neko Case every once and a while. I think it's better for R3 and Canadian artists if the door is just shut. I don't want to see a small exception come in, then it gets wedged a little wider and wider till we're just another international music station.

Um I can only generalize about myself here, but my concrete stance on the NO side of this has nothing to do with resisting change. As well many of the people making remarks in the no column, also have no issues with change.

The argument consistently being made is that in order to sprinkle in whatever percentage of international, you have to cut that amount of Canadian artists.

Furthermore, that change you think that people are afraid is really a step to the normal. To the status quo of everywhere else. The more songs they play that you can just find anywhere else, the less unique you are.

Some times to change you have to stand in the same place. And hold true to what makes you different.

I was introduced to the world of Canadian Indie music and CBC Radio3 in Feb '08. This station has opened my eyes (ears) up to a whole different world of music. It would be a sad state of affairs if the 100% Canadian R3 started to include an international flavour based solely on budget cuts.

That being said, I am new here and there is probably a whole world of independent music that I know nothing about. So if the CBC has to take the international road I hope they would stick with independent artists from around the globe, even though I assume the international playlist may be a way to earn some extra revenue (although I have no idea who that works, so I could be wrong).

On that note can I please request Take My Money And Run Cuff The Duke?

I also agree with what's being said - i.e. play more variety of Canadian bands and no international (read: USA) artists because we know where to find them already.
Besides, Canadian music is the best it's ever been so why not ride that wave and expose as much of it as we can?
So Grant, can you play Zeroes (a lesser known act from Montreal) and their track "PVC"?

1) Request: I haven't yet heard on the "radio" the song 'Sick Muse' off Metric's latest (Fantasies). Real good pop, especially the chorus. Should be a summer tune. Can you play?

2) Lepoidevin: Re previous mention, Patrick is playing at The Manx tonight "at eight". Paul Symes (The Sheep) was much impressed when he played a short set there, this past Saturday. I missed him.

3) Some American and other music (10%, say) would, IMO, be good in order to leaven the Canadian content some. I agree with the "too repetitious, same songs, sounds a bit like indie commercial" comment read on the air. I myself have gone off listening here for a while for two reasons, of which that was one: iIt was becoming repetititous to my ears. (Mind, Radio 2 also sounds that way to me at times.)

Personally I'm not afraid of "the new" - I add new artists to my personal playlists/iTunes/mp3 player almost daily, but only 1-2% come from outside of Canada and I can find them on any one of a thousand stations. Change for the sake of change is silly - if you decide not to get a kidney transplant because there is nothing wrong with your kidneys does that mean you "fear change".

For every person that comes up with an international artist to play, you also have to decide which Canadian artist gets cut from the playlist to accommodate that new International artist.

BUT!

That's not all. Grant will also find you their phone number and you have to personal call them explain to them why International Artist is more worthy than they.

Now there's an exciting twist - put that in your pipe and smoke it.

I like Canadian indie, and want to hear as much of it as possible.

I'd be against playing international indie artists on CBC Radio 3. This is a great place to go for strictly Canadian music. I agree with an earlier commentator, though: lately, R3 has been playing lots of the same music over and over again. It seems like I hear the same Peaches song at least twice an hour. I think you guys should keep playing Canadian indie, but maybe mix the newest singles in with a bunch of the older and less-played music available through the artists' pages on the R3 website. There's a lot of good stuff there that I haven't heard played for months, if not years. It'd add some variety to the daily listening experience and also add depth to listeners' understandings of the great Canadian indie bands on the scene today.

If you were to add any international indie bands to the mix, I'd suggest it be in the form of a weekly show, or maybe a daily feature where an intl. band or two is featured. Even so, the announcer should spin 'em with a story about how they're in some way related to Canada or the Canadian scene—maybe the band is touring through Canada, or they've collaborated with a Canadian band, or something like that.

Like I said, I love Canadian indie and I love R3. Keep up the good work.

this has always been a real concern of mine at CBC Radio 3 BUT a several months ago when we polled the audience and asked about our rotation system, the majority of the audience answered that they liked it exactly the was it is, which made my concerns a hard sell

Im just saying that if it does happen, and there is a high likelihood that it will, eventually this debate will go away. Not that that is necessarily a good thing...that people will get used to hearing international artists on Radio3...but eventually it won't be this heated.

They want to change radio3, you're saying no, that's you no liking their change :)

But maybe it's the wrong kind of change that they want to make. I agree that I hear a lot of the same big act names, which is why when I listen I ask for the indie artists that I know. And they do an AMAZING job having them in the rotation.
Case in point, they just played the Racoons. Hey Ocean is coming up on the list, Ben Worcester of Said The Whale keeps appearing to the left of the blog for the podcast (ps that photo is by www.jonathantaggart.com ).

The best solution? it is to ask for what you want to hear. 30%(ish) of people are asking to hear a few international songs, you should ask for the people you want to hear.
I'm indifferent on the issue, because they play what I want them to, when I ask nicely.

There are days when I'm almost ready to nominate Joel Plaskett for removal, but that feeling will fade when they stop playing him eight or nine times a day. Besides which, I'd really rather see his songs played less often in favour of some other Canadian artist. Maybe some more Mia Sheard and Kinnie Starr and Jets Overhead.

Start a new poll - set up the system so the same song can't be played twice in any midnight to 11:59 pm period (not a full 24 hours or it would be on at the same time every day) but on a given date you can't play the same song twice. I'd vote for it, and I think others would too. I must have missed the previous poll.

Really? I don't remember this poll. I'm actually not too surprised though as the occasional listener doesn't really hear the problem. I'm guess that the majority of your listener base isn't tuning in 8 hours out of the day like some of us. Still, I think the change would either be a neutral or slightly positive change for the occasional listener and a huge positive change for us, the heavy listeners.
I'm glad to hear what I hear as our main concern is one of yours as well.

@ Cathyort - I'm not trying to be mean or anything. Just it feels like I have to keep trying to pound this point home that I personally don't see how adding international artists will improve the rotation. It is, as JB, tb3 & BigRockFan have been saying, for every international artist that gets played, a smaller Canadian artist is being bumped. This isn't going to solve the problem where Craig decided he wanted to play Deny, Deny, Deny then Grant decided he wanted to play the same song on his show. These guys are busy and it's a lot of overhead to listen to/check playlists for other shows plus it gives preference for the earlier shows to play what they want. Can someone from R3 clear up this issue? I feel like it'd give my argument some weight.

What about bands that are partial Canadian? Like Bella? Does a band have to be more than 50% Canadian to be on CBC3 if you go 100% Canadian? I mean we'd still get Neko IN the New Pornographers, right? Or is it based only on where the performers' rights societies are? Or the publishing?

Now, come to me and say, "Our web stream is this, 100% Canadian stream and our Sirius feed is 85%/15% split, which would you prefer to have?" that sure doesn't sound like the Radio3 brain-trust are necessarily certain in what they want to change.

The point you raised initially was that people we resistant to change, which I countered is, not in my case, the mechanism of my dissent to the question. Nor do I think it is for others in the same thinking.

If they change the format to what I, and I have a strong feeling many others don't support, no, we likely won't pack up and move along. No we won't grumble about the change just because it's different.

But a little piece of me will die. And that has nothing to do with change. It's because some artists will be face with the same closed door they've experience on every other radio station…

I was going to say that it seems a bit insecure to insist that ONLY Canadian music be played. I love the Canadian music and agree that CBC Radio3 should remain a Canadian music station. But to set up rules that ONLY Canadian music can be played makes it seem as though we are scared to allow other music to enter our airwaves.
The occasional song by non-Canadians strengthens the station. It shows that our music can stand up to the music of the world, and then some.
Be strong. Be Canadian.

I remember seeing Kim Barlow in a guitar circle at about 3am in Dawson City in a cabin... pretty great, though I think I annoyed her by trying to convince her to bring it outside in the yard where Jon-Rae Fletcher, Old Man Luedecke and Tony Dekker were playing Bruce Springsteen and gospel tunes!

As someone said elsewhere there are all kinds of 100% radio stations - 100% British and even 100% British Invasion (60s stuff), all 80s, all 90s, etc., what is wrong with 100% Canadian - especially since it's the only one (as far as I know).

If it were an 'All 80s' station and they said "Should we add some new music to the mix" and the listeners didn't want to would that be "Insecure"?

Personally I see insecurity on the other side - something that says "All Canadian can't be good enough". But I say it can and it is. It's not insecurity, it's a combination of pride and the knowledge that there is still a ton of stuff out there that R3 isn't playing yet and alot of stuff that R3 doesn't play enough.

I like 100% Canadian. I'm currently living in the UK, and one thing that I've noticed here is how much homegrown media they have. For example, there are six BBC radio stations and 4 television channels. Result? They have many celebrities that are famous within the UK and don't feel that they need to go elsewhere to prove themselves. Now, obviously the population of the UK is much larger than Canada so the situations of our countries are not exactly similar. However, I think things like CBC Radio 3 really help to give us homegrown stars and it would certainly be a shame to lose that, even if it is only 15% of the playlist.

Also, adding international artists to the mix will make it more difficult for me to shamelessly promote Canadian culture over here!

One thing that makes some of the music here feel overplayed is that it also gets played all the time on Radio 2. "Hard Line" by Jill Barber is a catchy tune, but it gets played all morning by Tom Allen, then a couple times by Craig Norris, then once or twice by Rich Terfry, it's a bit much.

Maybe radio 3 could steer away from the easy listening of radio 2.

Like a lot of people have mentioned, it would be great to hear some different tunes by these artists. It does feel like you hear the "hits" a lot: (Wet feet on Grip tape, Through and through and through, Hey Snow White). All good artists, but these songs get played into the ground.

As for the 85% Can-con, that's about the percentage I have when I make a mix tape. Sounds good to me.

I wish I could request "5 american, 6 canadian" by Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet.

Not everyone loves Springsteen. Check out Spring Breakup - it's some stuff that Kim Barlow and Mathias Kom (Burning Hell) recorded in Dawson City over this past winter.

I know they are playing Sappyfest as Spring Breakup but I haven't seen any other dates for them.

I like the rotations system as it is. The approach of using more established artists/songs to "pull people in" and expose them to lesser-known artists (as Grant said) is a happy medium: it avoids the flaws of commercial radio (flogging established artists to death), and of some campus/community stations as well (playing plenty of lesser-known artists, but never really pulling in anyone who wasn't listening to that music already).

I agree with AlexOfAnders about the post about the repetition in the play list. I think when the dust settles on this separate, and I feel different issue you should re-approach that question.

Then again it may resolve when the Sirius and Web Streams become one.

But as a person who listens pretty much for 8 hours of my work day, I can tell you I do hear a LOT of the songs too many times. The best being when Vish's show ended with a song that Craig after his intro, began his show with. It was funny to me, but certainly something that needs to be retooled.

I just hope that it isn't muddling this discussion, and that some people thinking that playing more international songs the solution.

Two separate things to me.

First we take Manhattan.
Then Berlin.

Personally, it's not a problem of the same artists being used. I listen to a lot of my albums as an album so hearing a few songs by the same, more popular artist in a day doesn't bug me. It's just that the same song is getting used everyday, sometimes even multiple times a day (always on different shows of course). Like Grant said, depth of catalog. A lot of the popular artists have a lot of variety just within their own releases. So, if I hear Deny, Deny, Deny then Lana plays True Patriot Love and tomorrow Through and Through and Through gets played, it's not going to bug me. It probably won't even register. If one of those songs gets played in all three of those time slots, I'm going to notice and start to get a little weary of it. This is why I would love for the rotation system to be re-approached and revised.

I really like radio 3 as the 100% Canadian indie station that it is. Yes there is a degree of repeat factor, but as someone mentioned above sometimes different hosts will play the same song. But lots of time there is great variety. I actually find that Grant's show has the most variety with lots of stuff I don't hear at other times of the day. Of course the R3-30 is going to repeat alot each week but that is what that show is for - to play the most popular songs.
You can listen to other stations to get the international songs. What if there was one show a week on CBC that played international stuff? Like Danny Michel and Emm Gryner did a great show on cover songs one summer. Maybe there could be a CBC show that did international indie music. But I think Radio 3 should stay all Canadian. Our country's bands need the support and I love all the music played here!!

I agree they are separate issues, I also think the heavy rotation thing is easily solvable - You can play Joel Plaskett 10 times a day, just play 10 different songs and don't be afraid to play older stuff. Hearing BSS or Feist on R3 is pretty rare these days. Not to mention Royal City, Super Friendz etc., There should be enough of a back catalogue and enough NMC artists for R3 to play 24 hours a day of great CANADIAN music without playing the same song twice.

I like the idea of R3 playing international artists BUT it should be limited. I personally think that having a certain time slot dedicated to international artists would be good.

I don't think I did that math...I think I said that you're wrong in saying that they are going to turn small indie bands away from radio3 if they play anything but all Canadian. If you truly believe that is the case, then there is reason for worry.

Even the small bands need help now over the bigger Canadian acts.
What you should be doing is requesting them to play the lesser known bands that you want to hear more often to play in lieu of where these international songs would be.

I know tons of artists that are on the website with their music and I don't see it played.
Just keep asking.

I just want to reiterate that I believe it would be a big mistake to introduce international artists.

R3 does 100% Canadian well. We have learned to love, value and appreciate it because of what you have brought to us.

R3 fills a need both for the artists and audience, and reducing the Canadian artists played benefits no one.

i wouldn't mind hearing the odd international song but i definitely want 90%+ canadian content. ideally the random world songs would have some sort of meaning for the blog themes/items, or calendar date (holidays etc.).

ps - i really love listening to radio3 at work - im a desk job so it really helps get me through the afternoon lull. keep up the great work.

We both agree there is an unbelievable bevy of Canadian artists untouched by regular rotation of the Radio3 proper.

I don't see how adding International Artists solves that.

I vote for the current mix of international artists with the large percentage going to Canadian acts.

I listen to R3 95% of the time and get all of my new music exposure from you guys and it's nice to hear some bands like von bondies or a new beck song....

Plus Ilove the way your play list changes slowly like the shifting drifting sands.

At least to anyone and everyone that I may have offended if I've been overly harsh at times but this is kinda what I do - fight for Canadian arts - especially music. I run about a dozen facebook groups, and a couple of websites dedicated to that purpose and I've fought, over the years, with the federal government, with the CBC (to keep Radio 3 around and before that to try to get R3 at TV show and to try to get more Canadian stuff on CBC tv), I've fought (in a non-violent way) with individuals and even with groups that claim to represent musicians but don't always do a great job of 'representing'. I never thought I'd have to fight with Radio 3 over Canadian music but ...

All of this is done out of love. I've occasionally worked professionally in something music related but the amount of money I've made from this is about 1/4 of what I would have made if I'd devoted the same amount of time to being a dishwasher or picking apples.

If I've been over harsh and offended anyone I apologize but, as I said, it's what I do and I don't see myself stopping anytime soon at least until talented musicians in this country can, as a rule, be full time professional musicians without day jobs. (Some do that now, but it's far too rare.)

OneA, not to be mean but it sounds like you believe there is a single person at R3 who sits down and decides "Let's play Through & Through & Through on every show today!". Adding an international artist does not replace the repeated songs as it's not due to having too small a pool of Canadian artists or caused by someone driving to have certain songs played to death. It's a coordination issue, it's caused by the opposite. Different people are coordinating the playlists for each show and don't have the time or systems to coordinate to insure their song choices aren't going to be played already that day or later that day.

Grant, any one at R3, am I right in my assumptions on the rotation systems? I'm going to stop arguing it though. I think I'm just wasting blog space at this point ><

Why doesn't R3 work on getting 'partnerships' with other international stations and produce or distribute a segment that would play on them? That would be surely be a more effective way of generating more exposure than just putting international acts on this 100% Canadian site.

On the topic of changes to R3 in general, perhaps one the of the reasons there are so many repeats is that I would guess about 80% of the music R3 plays would be classified as indy-rock (and yes, I know it is a diverse genre). It might be nice if rather than the shows being largely distinguishable by the host and blog question of the day that they might take a genre theme for the show and mix it up a bit more. The Signal on Radio2 plays some incredible music that is Canadian that I have never heard anywhere else, there is also a nice roots show that they introduced that I like listening to as well. Just a thought.

Over the amount of comments from about 4 or 5 of us during a 3 hour period. I was on the "offending" side and apparently we'd been frustrating/annoying others.

If you guys decide to play international artists, I'd like to get some variety and hear those that I can't hear in the more conventional places. (This means please don't play a bunch of the White Stripes! They're not particularily horrible, but I hear them on the local radio station all the time.)

Two of my favourites I wouldn't mind hearing would be Beirut and Sufjan Stevens.

Here's the thing, if you make statements, and then I make comments to question, contradict, or ask for clarification, that's called discussion.

If I question your points, have the resiliency to stand up for what you state, and be okay that some people might not understand what you're trying to assert. Don't take aback, but appreciate discourse, debate isn't something to be scared of.

You got off on precarious footing with me, by painting with a big, wide presumptuous brush that stated those opposed to the content change were likely of this mental stalling point that "don't like change." Which was just a broad generalization.

You suggested later on that if they open the playlist to international artists that it won't in effect close the door on Canadian artists.

Your math, not matter what your opinion of the playlist and which artists get played, doesn't add up. I am sorry but 15% of the playlist gone to artists other than Canadian closes that time off from anyone unfortunate enough to be Canadian.

That's black and white.

The only words I am "pinning to you" are ones that you've said, or suggested.

So it's fine if you just came her to make statements, post them and not have to think about them any further after saying them. Much less just talk about them when they create interest…

But I think my harshness is a matter of opinion, that I'd be more than willing to discuss. You know if discussion is okay.

No worries! The rotation doesn't bother me at all, actually, I could listen to Through & Through & Through 100 times a day. I totally understand why songs get repeated, and honestly, the songs that get repeated many times on R3 are usually the ones I really like, so....

What I don't understand is why R3 is making such a big deal out of this issue with the listeners at this stage. Do we really have a voice? Or have they already made up their minds and are trying to get us mentally prepared to hear Beck or the White Stripes in the near future? It seems like it is going to happen anyways, and all this blog dissent is like listening to mommy and daddy fighting in the kitchen! It would be pretty cool if the word broke that the listeners voted to keep R3 100% Canadian though.

How many polls on this are there going to be? Do we get the final say, or will the committee do what they want anyways? Bah.

The only thing that really bugs me is when I hear a song in the last hour of one show and then again in the first hour of the next show. I can deal with hearing a song a few times throughout the day, just as long as it's spread out a bit.

I think it's been mentioned a few times before, but I'd really like to hear more of the classics played on R3. I think I'm pretty up to date with most Canadiana in the 2000s, but I'd like to learn more from the pre-2000 era.

It's only been made a big deal of on Grant Lawrence Live, really. I like Grant, but I do think he tends to focus on or encourage controversy. Keep in mind that this discussion comes from the same source as Fashion Fight Club.

i was just initially saying that I think the way they might handle it and work it into the rotation on themes and topics might be interesting. and that I had full faith that radio3 wouldn't destroy itself if it decided to do this.
i mean...they have access to a lot of Canadian music that is played internationally and they keep it small/indie (I don't think I'd listen if there was a chance of Nickleback being played)...

International Music is not a solution to anything...its a different dynamic. I don't necessarily care for it...I don't listen to any other radio (except NHL games!). I'll just continue to request my friend's bands until they don't need help anymore...

...if you knew that almost every single friend I have out here is an indie artist and the amount I do to support them (a lot) and that I'm an artists (photographer) myself, you'd think I'm crazy to not be shouting as loud as you are about it.

I was just playing Devil's Advocate, and discussion how they'd handle the IA addition. :)

(bands include: Said The Whale, Hey Ocean, Dan Mangan, Hannah Georgas, Nat Jay, Adaline, Laura Smith, Maurice, James Lamb, Shad, The Zolas (/Lotus Child), The Painted Birds...and that's just some of the list of people that live in Vancouver... the full list is seriously long.)

I hope they stick with the 100%... it's the reason I listen in the first place...to hear my friends grow and find new fans.

the people who post on this blog and the hardcore radio 3 fans voted against including international artists. depressing. however, this vote clearly represents the small number of diehard fans who a)knew about this poll and b) bothered to sign up to vote.

i hope the radio 3 powers that be employ other more diplomatic sources before they make a decision. personally, i welcome the contrast and comparison between the rest of the world and canada! not to fan any flames, but some of the "against' comments posted here were getting pretty rabid and likely intimidated dissenting opinions for piping up. the old either-you're-with- us-or-you're-against-us tactic was not something i expected in this forum. disappointing.

Now, I am glad you took the time to comment and make your opinion be known. That said, I'd be interested where your backing for this assertion that a faithful few that stacked the vote came from?

Cause seriously, if what you are asserting is true then it means the vote results of 77% for the Nay and 23% for the Yay, in relation to the people up there speaking against including International content I am guessing is 15, maybe 20 people speaking out consistently against, in the comments. So by those ratios 20 people voted no; 5 voted yes.

I'll bet you WAY more than 25 people voted in this one.

Something else to think about: If people were bullied into voting one way by the people most vocal, does that account for the people that voted, but said absolutely nothing here in the blog? Cause that's sort of anonymous isn't it? And no matter how against this I was, you're free to vote however the heck you want, and no one except the vote counters will know.

Before you get all MySpace drama over this, think about what you're trying to suggest, and then think: "Is this possible or this me making up something to help me get over being bummed about being in the minority?"

Your either with us or against us tactic? I don't really get what you mean. We're debating on where we feel R3 should go, many of us have very strong feelings about this. I'm guessing your meaning that you feel there was bullying going on. That the "Nay" side was being malicious towards the "Yay" side. I don't completely agree with this but if there is one deficiency this style of communication is it is wrought with misunderstanding. Things that would be fine to say in public if you had the body language and intonation to go along with it suddenly are open to be taken lighter, kinder or in this case sharper, meaner than intended.

I'm not going to speak for anyone but myself so I will say I took this as an important debate. If someone makes a point for the side I don't agree with I try to point out the flaws in their argument or bring up counterpoints that I feel have stronger weight. I haven't taken anything anyone said in this regard personally and I have tried to keep my comments respectful towards the person I'm arguing with. If it's been taken the wrong way as a malicious comment attacking the person and not their argument, I would say this is that person's fault and not mine.

Thus, to argue that the vote has no merit makes little sense to me. Sure, 100% of us diehard fans who have been very vocal on the blog voted. Most of us tried to spread the word and try to persuade others to our viewpoint. IF the numbers were released, you might be surprised that it wasn't a small number of votes, or maybe I'd be surprised that it wasn't that large. I believe there is a large audience for the web feed and only a fraction comment on the blog. If they didn't hear about the vote, then they either must not come to the site often or don't pay attention to the blog posts, the radio feed or the ads on the side as well as the other posts on other sites and through social networking tools. I just have faith that the vote system is representative of the audience and has merit. Also, I feel confident that our arguments on the blog have little influence over the vote results and the main reason we were so intent on convincing the other party was that we wanted to make the strongest argument possible for something we feel very strongly about so that the powers that be will see that we have given this a lot of thought and see good reason why they should be 100% Canadian.

In the end, I feel the important part was the discussion, the debate, more important than the vote. If you don't feel strongly enough to pipe up for the "for" side or are so sensitive that you can't handle having people attacking your argument then that's too bad. You could have added to the discussion. Why should we cap our passion? Just grow a pair and debate it out!

Absolutely. I've found this whole debate to be very revealing indeed. I'm glad people are so passionate, on either side. I'm a huge fan of Canadian music, but it's not defined by what CBC Radio 3 plays. Right now, I'm fine if they continue down the path their own right now, because it's really nice to come on here see people getting excited. But, really, if they start playing a few international artists, I won't lose sleep over it.

PASSION. That's what fuels our desires, be it politics, gardening or music. Nobody bullied anybody here, we on the Nay side perhaps made better and more concise points for our position? If you're passive and don't like confrontation, it's not right to call us bullies; vote your mind and be happy with it.

This is not a "for or against" forum, it's a place for opinions on the topic. We R3 listeners are all here because we have one thing in common...100% Canadian Indie Music. We're all pretty chummy and are able to debate each other without hurt feelings by getting personal. We who like the 100% percent Canadian are not going to run out on our mates just because they disagree. If you see things differently, please join us on the blog and speak your mind. That's what it is for.

If I want an International Music channel, I'll go and find one. If I want 100% Canadian Indie Music, I have CBC Radio 3. That has always been the point, and that will not change.

Sorry you lost this one. I wouldn't get too obsessive about finding the right conspiracy theory though. There was no conspiracy and there were no strong arm tactics (at least no one would say there were under oath.)

What has happened here is truly remarkable. After centuries of a certain inferiority complex, of Canadian artists having to be successful abroad before they were taken seriously at home an overwhelming majority of (mostly) Canadians have - for the first time in history (as far as I know) said that what we have, right here at home has value and is good enough, or at least good enough for us, regardless of what the world thinks - that all Canadian and only Canadian is good enough and we'd rather have more of it than things that are successful abroad.

It is not a knock on anything anyone is doing abroad - as has been pointed out many, many times - we know where to find that when and if we want it. But this is actually a pretty historic moment in Canadian arts, it is sad that a great many people won't think it's important or newsworthy and it's sad that you think so little of it, or think it must be some kind of a trick but regardless of what the CBC Radio folk decide to do, this is a serious and profound victory for Canadian music.
