I admit it, great music makes me giddy. Great music live makes me pretty near ecstatic. Last night's gig at First Baptist Church practically had me speaking in tongues. It was that good.

The B.C. Scene has swept into the nation's capital. The first night of scheduled events kicked off with Vancouver's Dan Mangan and Kitchener's Danny Michel on a double-bill for R2's Canada Live. It was what we in the biz call a "blended show" of B.C. and Ontario music. Dan succeeded in converting a room full of what was likely mostly Danny fans into followers of his raspy, six-string acoustic folk.

Dan brought up slam-poet from Penticton Shane Koyczan for a couple of medleys that included Dan's "Fair Verona" and "Not What You Think It Is" bridging Shane's incredibly moving and clever wordplay. The pews rocked with laughter, emotion, and eventually, the standing ovation they gave opener Dan Mangan at the end of his set!

For anyone else that might have been too tough an act to follow, but not for the consumate pro and master of witty banter Danny Michel. He played up The Duel of The Dans before looping, layering, and lyricizing the audience of long-time fans into remembering he was exactly why they showed up in the first place. They just happened to get a super-bonus Dan in the bargain.

As of tomorrow, April 24th the concert will be available to stream here and will be available as a Canada Live podcast through iTunes on Tues. April 28th.

I'll be out at The Capital Music Hall tomorrow for a live broadcast here of Black Mountain, Ladyhawk, & The Pack A.D. (Also on Sirius 86)

It really feels like worship to me, hearing great music in a church. Can't wait to stream / download.

I am so happy we can relive it, as I really was interested in hearing those two artists, in the context of that ambiance.

Gotta think you're going to hear the kind of warmth that happens in places like the Aeolian Hall, and that church that Chad VanGaalen played in, in Calgary was it?

Places like that make for magical nights.

Who knows? Either way, it was nice to see Danny didn't get struck down by lightning, as he predicted, when he played "If God's On Your Side (Then Who's On Mine?)"

That is one concert on demand everyone should be seriously looking forward to!

I must say that every time I hear a review about a show that happens at First Baptist, it's entirely positive. I think you're spot on about the warmth thing, tb3. That and all the wood everywhere must make for a beautiful atmosphere.

My colleague from Vancouver turned to me this morning and said, "You know, over the course of 24 hours I've noticed that you really, really love music. You're not just calling it in."

I guess I don't hide the giddy very well do I? J'aime la musique.

You are right about that - I for one did not know Dan Mangan's music very well but after hearing it last night I was definitely converted. Good thing Danny Michel can hold his own.
The show was amazing - and I want to thank JP and CBC Radio3 for providing me with two tickets last night.

I saw Dan Mangan a few weeks ago when he opened for Hey Rosetta! and was beyond impressed. Then when I was trying to get Danny Michel tickets last week I found out about this show and all I could think of was ...wow that will be one helluva show... thank goodness for R2 so the rest of us can hear it!
