Today's Guest:
Henry Adam Svec (
The CFL Sessions)
UPDATE: Interview now online!
I received an interesting, and kind of mysterious, email recently from
Henry Svec. He was writing to promote his new project,
The CFL Sessions: An Archive of Songs Written By Canadian Football Players.
I have seen football players sing before (and rap - ever hear The Chicago Bears' "
Superbowl Shuffle"? Or, how about
Guy Lafleur's disco album?),
but I have not heard any musical offerings by players from the Canadian Football League.Henry says that he discovered a stash of recordings by CFL players "captured in the 1970s by the late Canadian folklorist
Staunton R. Livingston" while he was working at The National Archives of Canada. Somehow the songs have now been brought back to life with the help of
Andy Magoffin (at The House of Miracles),
composer WL Altman and R3 favourite
Laura Barrett.
The whole thing smells a bit fishy to me, but I really like the music, so I've invited Henry Adam Svec on the show today to tell us more about it. (Henry also performs in
Peter Mansbridge and the CBC's and
The Boy From ET and is based in London, Ontario).
You can download The CFL Sessions for free from this website, and then you've got yourself a great soundtrack to an afternoon of tossing around the ole football.
So, are you a CFL fan?
Are you a sporty sort of person?
Now that the weather is warming up, what outdoor activity are you most looking forward to?
