I'd like to hear Hannah Georgas, anything but Beat Stuff. She put on a great show on Friday night at the Biltmore and impressed me - she is so much more than that one, very catchy song.

Years ago, I saw you when he was playing in hHead at The Embassy in London (actually my brother's band opened for you), but do you still see Noah… is there any talk of ever revisiting writing/playing with Noah or hHead?


I'd request Fireman by hHead, but I don't see it on NMC and assume that's a bad sign for me wanting to hear it.

James Hall, the bassist for Sam Roberts wore that poncho (or one like it) during the entire first set in San Francisco on Thursday. Sure hope it was cooler up there at Junos, as it had to be terribly hot! He was down to his t-shirt for the encore.

And Sam did bring down the house here with Them Kids. Wow. And cograts to a great, gracious person. (I'm referring to Sam, not you Grant.) :)

Hey I'd love to hear Cancer Rat by Bison (now Bison bc)- I've been using their album Earthbound as a sort of dorm room justice to those who keep everyone up at night. Nothing bette than some headbanging at 6am!
Also, as for the Junos- I really don't care about them anymore. i think they're pretty irrelevant, since they're based on sales and we all know what 'wonderful' taste most consumers have. I say we put all that money towards expanding Polaris. I mean, Nickleback? Seriously.

Thanks! Fuse getting cancelled was a tragedy. Still if we don't swing the the govt. back to the world of common sense a ton of good shows are going to get cancelled. Hard times and there are huge limits on what you can do without money.

I don't think it could be called 'sour grapes'. I think it's mostly part of Radio3 listeners having really good taste in music and expecting everyone else too as well. And maybe it's a bit of surprise each year at the groups chosen which often seem pretty ignorant- such as the Stills as best new group when they have put out several albums. When I discussed them with people who share my taste in music we mostly said that although a few of the artists are among our favorites, a Juno nomination or win just doesn't mean that much to us.

Have you seen the DVD that comes with her CD? It’s a must see for every Saskatchewanian, and it’s guaranteed to give you goose bumps.

I agree somewhat with your comment. If the complaints about the Junos were simply because the people we want to win didn't, then it would be juvenile. And fan awards should be given to the one with the most votes; no matter how distasteful the choice, it is by vote.
However, I have a problem with mediocrity being awarded, as well as mainstream radio choices being pushed as "Canadian musical diversity." The Juno for album of the year was between Nickelback, Hedley and Simple Plan and I'm being told that there's representative variety there? If our awards do not reflect our vast talent, why have them?
My final beef (for now) with this specific Juno awards is with the lack of respect, no matter what your standpoint on certain issues. Russell Peters and his obnoxious amount of pot jokes does not do any justice to the push to decriminalize marijuana. The awful Much Music guy's comments about how he wants to hump every living male in the stadium don't do jack for gay rights. Nickelback's song "Something in your mouth" with gyrating suggestive female imagery -- come on, really? It wasn't just my musical taste that was soured, but my moral fibers as well.

This is why it matters. If you’ve been listening to R3 recently you may have heard Julie Doiron talk about how the Junos helped break her career commercially. The fact of the matter is that there are a lot of people who don’t follow the music scene enough to know who the best and most important Canadian artists are, and who look to awards like the Junos to inform them. The result is that when someone wins, or even gets nominated for these awards, they gain a lot of exposure and they sell a lot more albums. If you look at the Junos’ categories where the nominees and winners are supposed to be judged on artistic merit, however, you will see many artists who haven’t received anywhere near top level critical acclaim, and you will not see the names of many others who have received much more critical acclaim. Woodpigeon and Martha Wainwright are examples two artists who have received a lot of critical acclaim this past year and yet who mysteriously were not nominated. Serena Ryder and Sarah Sleen, otoh, are two good artists but nonetheless artists who have not received anywhere near as much critical acclaim, and yet their names pop up again and again in Juno nominations, and Ryder has even won. The bottom line is that when this happens lots of press and thousands of dollars that should be going to the deserving artists, our top artists, are going to other artists instead. And if you look a little deeper you’ll see a pattern. Many, but not all, of the artists who get nominated when they clearly don’t deserve to be are in one way or another connected to the circle of people who run the awards. See Devine Brown, Sarah Sleen, Serena Ryder and LIGHTS as examples.

Great comments, but I think Julie said it was the Polaris Prize nomination that turned her career around, not her Juno win...
