Today's Guest: Michael McGowan

Michael McGowan, writer and director of the new Canadian film One Week, says that with this film, he wanted to "create a narrative that was also a love-letter to the county." Well, if his movie is a love letter, then the soundtrack is the mixtape he made for his girlfriend, Canada.

You, Radio 3 listener, you will love it. The story is about a guy who has just found out that he is terminally ill, and he decides to take off on a road trip instead of seeking treatment. Songs from Stars, Wintersleep and Great Lake Swimmers play as Ben Tyler (played by Joshua Jackson) travels from Toronto west to Tofino.

I had a chance to speak with Michael McGowan about the way Canadian music fits into One Week, and also about the Canadian musicians who are acting in the film.

One Week opens this Friday, March 6 - and if you go see it on opening weekend, I know that the folks at the First Weekend Club will be proud of you.

I've seen the preview, and a quick clip that aired on The Hour when George was interviewing Joshua Jackson and it does look good to me.

Plus, I want to see Gord Downie as a biker.

Martin, hopefully the response will be so strong across the country that PEI will pick it up shortly. (That way you won't feel bad if you go see The Watchmen this weekend ... ?)

I saw this in a festival a couple of weeks ago. It's full to the brim of Canadianisms...from indie music, to Gord Downie, to roll-up-the-rim, to german tourists in Tofino, to Oil Tycoon's in Fort Mac. It's fun to watch, but all the shout outs to Canadian culture don't quite mask the basic cheese in the plot and dialogue. Don't get your expectation TOO high. But don't get me wrong, I still liked it.

okay, yes to the cheesy bits, but cheesy is really yummy, especially if you happen to be blessed with a Canadian sense of humour...the whole scene with the supersized landmarks, and every cliche -- c'mon everyone, doesn't our collective humour & sensibility operate simulataneously at the by rote and beyond? I loved it...park your harsh critic at the door, and just enjoy.

George's interview with Joshua Jackson about his movie was again a typical lets justify, oh and then justify again Why did you make a Candian movie? All about Canada and our icons. Oh my god, the rest of the world may not get the referrences, oh dear, you are spreading more stereostypes about Canadians... hell this is what we are. Why does the media givin to the idea we need to justifying ourselves to the world? Do you think the Americans care wheather we as Canadian's will understand their jokes?

I was impressed with Joshua's responses, articulate and intelligent. WOW!!!
