Also, it would be awesome if it could be determined for both the general public and the canadian bands' perspectives. Like if people with NMC accounts could vote on the best from the perspective of Canadian bands, and if the rest of the public could vote from a concertgoer's perspective.

It would be great to know where the best venue is for bands, and where the best venue is for attendees.

Any alternative venue spaces. Churches, community spaces, thrift stores, record shops...anything that isn't a club, but is a venue.

The Art Space, in Prince George is the best. It may not be all sexy and fancy but here is why it is the best:

1. You can host your own events, shows there.
2. Local artists can put art on the walls for sale.
3. It's got a great vibe from its made in the 60s decor.
4. It's upstairs from the best independent bookstore in northern BC.
5. Best of all, the owner of the whole building and bookstore, Jim Brinkman, will sometimes let you host a show there for free.... for example, Jim is a great sponsor for the Coldsnap Festival, B.C.'s premier winter music festival. As a result, the artists who play there can actually get some real money instead of lining the pockets of some Tony Soprano wanna-be.

Basically, it's a cool joint where many new and upcoming indie musicians have gotten their start - as a result, it's a defacto community arts center and the cultural place to be in Prince George.

as the rules state, the "space" needs to be predominantly a music venue to qualify... I love seeing the odd show at Ruffles Hair Salon in New West too, but it only has a show about once every six months...

I love that place! Although, I will say the mic-ing isn't always perfect.

Although, can I also say Richard's on Richards? I like the layout, still has a small club feel but fits a lot of people. Enough room to get down on the floor as well.

But I wish we could have an honourable mention for 'Best Club That's Now Been Bulldozed or Changed to a Crappy Canned Music Venue' - then my noms for those would be a tie between the late Harpo's in Victoria and the Starfish Room/Club Soda in Vancouver (saw many legends at both - Alice in Chains at Harpo's was a mind-blower...and my first band interview, ever, was cub at Harpo's in the uber-cool band room which was a treehouse-like perch looking right over the stage!)

Unfortunately, we don't have a music venue in Waterloo then. We don't have anywhere that is predominantly a music venue.

Our main venue in town, the Starlight, only has one show a week, and is predominantly a bar.

I think Starlight still qualifies... Very few venues in Canada have a concert every night, and are a bar on the nights when there isn't a concert. So I guess I'll nominate Starlight.

Obviously it's our neigbhourhood bar and favorite place top play a show or see a show.

A couple others that I love:
The Railway Club
and
The Duncan Showroom Garage.

Everyone knows the railway, but nowhere near enough people know the Duncan Showroom Garage - http://www.duncangarageshowroom.ca/

If you ever have a chance, please get out to a show there. It is a gorgeous little theatre that likely only holds about 75 people, but it is one of the most charming, comfortable spaces I've had the good fortune of playing....unfortunately when we (Slow down, Molasses) played there, we only played to 5 people...despite this it was one of the most enjoyable shows we've played AND hearing that Jason Collett, Rock Plaza Central and Zeus had played to 15 people a few days prior (and apparently enjoyed it as much as we did), we didn't feel too bad about the low turnout.

For Toronto

Rancho Relaxo - for being small and intimate without being cramped - I've seen some great shows there

Gladstone Hotel Ballroom - again small and intimate but good acoustics and usually a great crowd.

the Tranzac - great little venue that isn't afraid to host unusual shows (it's run as a non-profit co-op)

The Music Gallery / St. George the Martyr Church : No bar but amazing acoustics!

and, of course

the Horseshoe (50 + years as a live music venue, the list wouldn't be complete if the shoe wasn't on it.)

2. Barrymore's Music Hall in Ottawa (too bad the new ownership is more interested in screwing things up...rather than booking/hosting shows)

4. The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto (whatever happened to the idea of opening up a horseshoe tavern in different Canadian cities???...I remember hearing about this on Radio Sonic when they did a live remote from the Horseshoe a few years ago).

As for your sis-in-law I probably don't know her (unless we met unless we met on a night when she wasn't working) I tend to give sound techs their space unless the really want to talk to me about something.

love love love the Royal Albert Arms.

also, though I know Grant won't agree with me, love the Pyramid in Winnipeg. Sound is great there, and it's impossible to get a bad view (which, unfortunately, we can't say about the albert).

And as soon as the West End Cultural Centre reopens after extensive renovations, I'm sure it will be a contender for best live music venue, it was already fantastic prior to the renovations and if the outside is anything to go by right now it will continue and improve upon it's existing excellence.

Speaking of which, *cough* it'd be great if we could get some bands to start coming through winnipeg again, we've had a bit of a dry spell as far as music is concerned here lately...

The Starlight Room is pretty awsome most of the time. I have the privledge of seeing my boyfriend's band play there once in a while, and I usually enjoy it. I find the staff a little cold (especially the coat check girls) But I did see Metric play there last year and it was mind blowing!!

The venue right below the starlight... Formerally the Velvet Underground, Now I think it's called the Brixx... Is a pretty fun most of the time. Lot's of local bands play there almost every night, and it's alot smaller than the starlight. Also there are often DJ's spinning (ie. Sebastian Granger) on the weekends. It has a good vibe about it, and mostly full of "INDIE KIDS" as my friend likes to call us. haha.

With a kick ass mexican restaurant during (some of) the day(s), and a jumpin' beam-fuelled music venue at night - it's got the best of both worlds.

Whether it's an old favourite, or a new artist on some trapping line through the prairie; John Scoles brings us the very best that this country has to offer. If your lucky - you might get to toss his chicken, he won't mind one bit!

George's Fabulous Roadhouse is by far the best live music venue on the Canadian east coast, not simply because we happen to have some of the best shows every year including last nights Plants & Animals/Wintersleep extravanganza as well as the upcoming Constantines/The Weakerthans show in March but also because of all the amazing blues and jazz acts that come through as a part of Sackville Blues society including the likes of Syl Johnson from this previous summer. As well, Georges is one of the post popular venues for the well known Sappyfest and Stereophonic music festivals held ever year in Sackville, NB. Also, being a roadhouse, Georges serves not only wings and beer, but every Saturday and Sunday morning, Georges has one of the best breakfast's for your buck after a hard night of music and partying, very well known. Georges Fabulous Roadhouse, a definite contender.

The Grad Club! In Kingston, Ontario! Although the shape of the ol' Victorian house can be odd for some, no matter where you are you feel so close to the musician and the music! It's just a delight of a place!

I'd nominate the Alix Goolden Hall in Victoria. It's a church turned music venue that still has the huge organ pipes along the wall behind the stage. In the past year it has hosted acts such as Kathleen Edwards, Final Fantasy, Hawksley Workman, Black Mountain, Buck 65, Cadence Weapon, and others. Despite being able to seat about 800 people there's something still intimate about the space. Many of the acts I've seen there end up doing an unplugged (no amps!) song or two - magical!

It's The Lo Pub, or Times Changed, for sure. Don't make me choose one.

John Scoles of T.C. supports the arts in many ways, working with other festivals, and displaying art works of local artists as well.

But then, The Lo has an art show going on now as well...AND, Jack took the VLT'S out.

Going to Amigo's is like going where everybody knows your name... it's like a Mexican Cheers. (The more I mull that comparison over the more it sounds totally awesomer.) I mean, where else can you dine on a chimmy changa and wash it down with the libation that is the best live music in the nation? Also, patrons of amigos tend to wear a lot of sharp looking flannel.

re The Albert. I mean, it is pretty legendary (at least in Wpg, and the Rheostatics (probably among others) have named-checked it) but ya - there are definitely sight-line issues, among other things. As far as good Winnipeg live music venues go, I second the votes for the Lo and Times Change(d). Also looking forward to the new West End Cultural Centre!

Railway Club is my absolute favourite - I head there without even checking out who is playing. Great place to see a show, and they actually PAY! That is a big deal.

And the layout is just weird and awkward enough to make the experience unique and wonderful. :)

If your venue seats 50 or less and is made of brick and/or underground please book acoustic shows or turn the amps way down. In a room that small with that kind of acoustics you don't really need amplifiers - it only distorts the sound.

I just want to add that the Blacksheep Inn is at its best during the winter. There's something magical about the atmosphere and setting that make it a great place to see a show during the colder months (especially during the annual Christmas time shows featuring Ottawa's own Jim Bryson). It's also quite the experience to see a Sunday afternoon show at the Blacksheep during the fall. There is a large window at the front of the stage which acts a partial backdrop to the stage. Through the window is quite a magnificent view of the surrounding landscape (the Gatineau river and autumn coloured trees just to name a couple).
Plus there's a tiny dog (a pug) who walks freely throughout the venue during the shows. Just watching the dog snake its way through the crowd is worth the price of admission alone.

The Biltmore Cabaret in Vancouver

It is quickly becoming one of my favourite venues. I've seen The Stills, Hey Rosetta! & Two Hours Traffic and Bend Sinister there so far, and coming up there will be AC Newman, Plants & Animals and Said the Whale.
People may not know of it now, but they will.
The only downside, it's not in downtown vancouver and in kind of an odd location...

Too bad this is coming form me...the proprietor...but, with us being in little 'ol Windsor, even locals forget their hometown pride:

Phog Lounge has such an uphill battle.
Very few venues match what Phog does online to promote bands, shows, events, and community in Windsor, Ontario.
Phog Lounge has been trailblazing with events such as and "Musicians Scoring Famous Speeches of History", and "Teaching Tech to the Creative Class" which is aimed at informing musicians, artists, etc, how to get online and into the fray.

Aside from events, we've hosted the first two Polaris Prize winners (Watson and Pallett) in a room fit for 60! Plaskett, Elkas, Doiron, YSPWSD, Gryner, The Doers, Run Chico Run, The Cape May, The Awkward Stage, Cuff The Duke, The Dudes, Great Lakes Swimmers, Fembots, Holy Fuck, Lindy, The Mark Inside, Mohawk Lodge, Mother, Mother, A Northern Chorus, Pack A.D., Bob Wiseman, Young and Sexy, and Tokyo Police Club play the room alongside loyal, deserving locals and relatively unknowns who need to start somewhere.
We've even decided to break into the hugely non-lucrative world of all-ages shows...not for the money, but to show a city of kids who listen to Top 40 that there is better...way better.

I think these are the places that need to be acknowledged as the true gems in Canadian music. The places that give the "up and comers" a chance.
These are the places that build the bands. This is where they get their chops.
Need I mention I'm the only venue owner listening to Radio 3?
Phog Lounge is the place that dreams begin, not necessarily where they come true.

The Jim Bryson's show was amazing in December.

The space is rad - very Cheers meets Psychiatrists office.

I'll add my voice to the Royal Albert Arms in Winnipeg!

Echoing Cam Pipes' comments on air about the Cobalt - the Albert has a dive bar, come-as-you-are element that newer clubs cannot re-create. Leave your feather boas at home.

I've seen everyone from Green Day to The Melvins to the Jesus Lizard to modern luminaries like Handsome Furs, Black Dahlia Murder, Akron/Family and The Fucking Champs. This is a club that celebrates diversity from both its local content to the touring ones. If only they'd celebrate taking the gross out of the bathrooms. I'd consider either holding it in or getting a catheter.

Outside of being a great live music venue, has been my favourite place on a quiet afternoon for a beer - the jukebox alone is a landmark.

Great, great place that makes the cold, lonesome winters warm with great staff and bands! All hail "Q" the bartender!

My fav place for live music in Calgary is Broken City. They feature a great mix of artists of different genres, have a plentiful beverage menu to enjoy, and something strange always happens when I go there...

PS I am a Haligonian ... so of course I have to mention the Marquee Club on Gottegen!!!

the distance is a bit of a problem but when it is possible to get there, it is always a great night. Luckily they have a shuttle bus from the Dominion Tavern (worthy of a nomination itself) for some of the shows featuring some of the bigger local acts.
I missed the Bryson shows this year but have attended in years past...always a good time. There's even a patron who I always seem to see there who looks like Santa Claus.

I realize it has changed hands since that murder. There is no indication that they are using any more discretion with their residents.

It is also interesting that the renovations are starting on the top floors rather than working on the bar, venue and bathrooms.

Last time I was there a broken beer and bottle stayed on the floor for a couple hours, and then they kicked out the guy that slipped and fell on it.

I'd like to nominate the Marquee in Halifax as best venue in Canada. I've gone to so many great shows there over the years and have so many great memories, such as Joel Plaskett's "month of Mondays where he played every Monday for $4, seeing The Local Rabbits, The Flashing Lights, The last Thrush Hermit show where Ian McGerrigan almost set the place on fire, Joel Plaskett's In Need of Medical Attention release, back when he was still known as "the skinny guy form Thrush Hermit", and had a brush-cut and played an acustic with a microphone taped into it...

So many memories.

I'll be sad to see it go.

By the way:
Regarding the "closing", didn't they say they were closing about 3 years ago, just to stay open for special functions? Sounds to me like what they're saying now. Should this give me hope?

Paul's Wharf in St. George! It's tiny and full of characters, and the locals have perfected the reverse stage-dive (drunkenly falling onto the stage). Everybody has a blast here.
And we have a skating rink behind the deck. Spiked hot chocolate anyone?

Okay, I vote for the Railway Club in Vancouver because it is the only venue I've been to in that city. We were young and nervous to be in a 'big city', but we went and saw Whitey Houston play and realised that we travelled to Van and ended up seeing an Edmonton band!

As for Edmonton, the venues are pretty BLAH BLAH BLAH.
Starlight is O.K. staff are super mean and the bar is scummy.
New City USED TO BE GOOD, when it was at it's old location (I now currently work in the building next door to it's old location). Wesley Willis was the best show ever. It's new location was okay for a while, but then it became overrun with decorations from parties past and instantly became a scummy dirty trashy bar where only the industrial music fans dare to go on a regular basis (or those young enough not to care).

My vote for best venue (that is now defunct) would go to The Sidetrack Cafe (original location). It was a small venue that served great food (Nachos!) and had awesome shows constantly. They moved after developers sold the land for condos (UGLY also down the street from my office) and at their new location things didn't seem to ever take off.

I miss the old sidetrack. It's where I met my love and where I also stalked Wide Mouth Mason in Highschool.

Lo Pub in Winnipeg, why? It has a nice intimate setting in a small pub in downtown Winnipeg. Bands like Rock Plaza Central and Plants and Animals have played the Lo. It's an amazing pub, not only does it have a nice local down to earth atmosphere, it's also a smaller venue so that you wont be surrounded by hundreds of other people, I prefer a more intimate relaxed setting where people can sit down, have a pint of local delicious beer and enjoy the show. Jack Jonasson manages the place and he has a very extensive history with dealing with music himself, since he's part of Novillero and regularly tours with the band

Hey guys,
im from montreal and have recently gotten into indie music and cbc radio 3.
the first band i learned of was the acorn and subsequently the first cbc radio 3 indie artist i saw was the acorn.

i saw them at La Sala Rosa.
this is a great venue, theres a great atmosphere with a great clean crowd.

RadioHead - the murder that happened was upstairs, not in the venue.

While we can both agree on the bathrooms, I think bringing up that murder without any kind of context puts the Albert in the wrong light...considering the relative violence at upper-scale dance clubs in this city in recent memory - I would add The Albert as being one of the safest rooms in the city.

Anyhow, let's let this blog serve for the nominations instead of the two of us going back and forth!

Loved seeing places like La Sala Rosa, Call the Office and Winnipeg's own Lo Pub and Times! All amazing venues. I surely hope there is an honorable mention for runner-ups, because I'd hate to have to choose just one club in Winnipeg. Let alone the entire country!

I agree that my first comment did not put that event in context. I apologize for that.

I would dare say that, even though the blog post did not set criteria for what would be considered the "best" venue, it was more than surprising that a venue like the Albert would be nominated.

Yes, lots of band play there. That's not enough for best.

It has a sordid history, and is unpalatable in many ways.

We have many great venues here where the music and patrons are valued.

It went all rock for awhile but in the last year or so they have hired a new booker who really mixes it up. It's like going back in time the place is fantastic once again

I'm going to go ahead and nominate The Lo Pub, which (in the interest of full disclosure) is my bar here in Winnipeg. We've been hosting shows here regularly since I took over a year ago and in my humble opinion it's the best place in town to see a band. We've done tons of shows for touring bands like Mugison, Land of Talk, Rock Plaza Central, Plants and Animals, Library Voices, and The Acorn, as well as awesome local acts like Boats, Crosstown Rivals, Chords of Canada, Haunter, Oldfolks Home and The Waking Eyes.
I took a lot of cues for what I do here from my own experiences on the road, especially what I've experienced in Europe. Every touring band that plays here gets a bed to sleep in (we're located in a hostel and the beds are free for touring acts), drinks and food in a comfortable environment (It sort of feels like a cross between someone's basement and a cool british pub) where the people running the place are passionate about what they do.
Anyway, enough of the sales pitch. I'd also like to mention The Royal Albert and Times Change(d). Sam Smith and John Scoles are two of the most honorable people I know and it would be a joy to see either of them win the honor of best Music Venue in the country. But I also wouldn't turn it down...

I've spent quite a bit of time in both Hamilton and Waterloo. Hamilton's top 2 are the Casbah and Pepper Jack Cafe. Waterloo's top 2 are the Starlight and Jane Bond. (Jane Bond also wins best place to go on a first date in the KW region)

I've never been to a more cozy, intimate and enjoyable concert than the ones at Phog.

Plus, there's so many other things they put on over there all the time!

I wish everyone in Windsor knew the secret of how awesome Phog is. Then, maybe they would listen to more canadian-based music and not friggin' Eminem or whatever they're producing across the U.S. of A.

Great little venue in the heart of Windsor. Have heard many great local and National bands in this intimate venue. The owner Tom is a great lover of music and fervent supporter of the arts. He's an awesome promoter and uses social media to great effect to get the locals out. He also hosts the most creative events I have seen in a long time (i.e. set local music to famous speeches). Best of all, Tom inspires local artists to get out there and to get involved.

The Black Sheep isn't really that great. There's a big pole in the middle that obstructs an otherwise intimate view. There's not enough seating and its in the middle of nowhere. It's nice.. but terribly limited. I'd like to cast my vote for Corktown in Hamilton, just because there's no way a concert venue can ever satisfy anyone but the kids who are just starting out and playing their first reall gig in the shittiest bar on the wrong side of Steeltown for an intimate group of their friends and some very grimy regulars.

In the desert that is Windsor the PHOG is a welcome oasis. With owners who deeply care about nourishing all that Canadian indie culture has to offer, the bar has become the springboard for lots of homegrown talent and a perfect stop for touring bands. I've lived all over Canada and have never found such a welcoming place with such a gobsmacking lineup.

The Grad Club in Kingston is a small venue that brings in great live acts. Everyone can see and hear, the staff is friendly, and the acoustics are good. Jason Collett, Hidden Cameras, Wintersleep, lots of exciting Canadian music.

I live 4000 km away and it's still my favourite venue.

The WECC is closed right now, but dfefinitely deserves a mention. I've played there many times and it really is one of the best places in the country to play, not just for the room but the people also.THey are undergoingan entire building refit, and it's starting to really come together, and are planning on re-opening this spring. Dom Lloyd is one of my favorite people on the planet.

With a capacity of 50 or 60 and the nerve/bollocks to bring in the likes of Patrick Watson YSPWSD, Holy Fuck, Tokyo Police Club, Final Fantasy, et cetera, Phog is easily the best. Besides the name dropping, it's the best place to be even when the stage is completely empty.

The Lo pub is probably my favorite venue in all of Canada. Not only is it held together by an amazing guy named Jack but it also has all around great staff and a comfortable environment. It is kinda like watching your favorite bands in your living room but with a little more space and a lot more people.

I live and love Halifax, but I have to say that my favourite music venue-club in Canada is Call The Office in London, ON.
Most of the best live shows I've seen have happened in that dank little hole-in-the-wall of a bar. Highlights include my hometown hero Matt Mays, Aussie super-band Powderfinger, and the god of thunder and rock himself, the mighty THOR. Incredible times. Long live CtO!!

Call the Office in London Ontario is one of the best live music clubs in Canada. EVERY band plays there before they become big, its like a proving ground. My friend saw Radiohead there before they were huge. They also get a huge slew of Canadian bands :)

Located on the outskirts of Sackville, George’s Fabulous Roadhouse is well worth the long walk from town-- even in sub-zero temperatures. Music lovers gather at this Sackville institution to see some of the best acts coming through the Maritimes. Just glancing at the tour dates of artists like The Constantines, Wintersleep, and Jason Collett is enough to secure George’s nomination for Best Music Venue in Canada. George’s Fabulous Roadhouse attracts the best of the best acts off the provincial capital circuit to this small but mighty town. George’s is also an important venue for local artists and to Sackville’s two music festivals: Sappy Fest and Stereophonic. Going above and beyond, the owner Darren was a big part of making the recently concluded Stereophonic run as smoothly as it did. Without a doubt, the best live music club in Canada is the Black Sheep Inn/Mouton Noir in Wakefield Quebec. Paul Symes, his staff and Lucy, the house pug, provide an incredible variety of music and at amazingly low ticket prices. While fostering the careers as such new stars as Serena Ryder and providing a venue for Canadian luminaries such as Garnet Rogers, the Black Sheep Inn has always had the unique ability to transform itself from a typical small town tavern in the daytime to a magical, electric, eclectic musical community as show time approaches. The audience it attracts is adult, attentive and appreciative no matter who is playing. It is not a bar with live music, it is a music venue with a bar. The sign above the door, Be Nice Or Leave, aptly describes the ambiance. Where else in Canada at the same time can you drink great beer, listen to great musicians, see a steam train chug along an amazing river valley and be among avid, respectful music fans? I vote for the Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield. Although, it's an hour commute from where I live, there's no where I'd rather see my favorite songwriters perform.

New Brunswick's heat of all things non secular, Down Town Fredericton, its a small, dirty, sweaty hole in the wall but everyone there is always up for supporting local art and music, not afraid to let lose and grove even in the middle of a blizzard. With a local or imported beverage in hand the Capital ranks HIGH on my list. Dedicated are the owners, staff, concert goers and acts, Gotta LOVE IT.

since my house is [technically] not a venue right now, i'll comment on another -

the WAVERLY in CUMBERLAND, BC - this place is a secret little Canadian gem in a beautiful island town filled with energetic young people who are HUNGRY for a party. if your band is touring Canada and you're not sure if you want to go to the island just for Victoria/Nanaimo, consider booking a show at the Waverly! it's a great place, afterwards you can drink in the streets until sunrise - and there is a wonderful hostel right across the street.

We (The Golden Hands Before God) started off in the mean streets of Windsor and we would never have gotten off them if it wasn't for Phog Lounge. A small venue, for sure, but one that trades size and pomp for intimacy and a crowd that CARES. You may only fit 60+ people in that place, but all 60+ legitimately care about live music and how it's performed. And no one more so than it's proprietor Tom Lucier. This man's infectious love for live music (especially Canadian live music) is overwhelming. His laugh is infamous. The bands out here on CBC Radio 3 who have played the stage at Phog (quite possibly the smallest stage in Canada as well) know what I speak of. Tom has a heart that pumps indie music through one of Canada's most over-looked cities and it should not go overlooked.

Side track. Six degrees of rock-a-nation on the three bands listed today...
Elliott Brood - 2/3 are from Windsor, our home town. They moved to Toronto and started Elliott Brood.
3 Inches of Blood - Our tambourine smasher Jamie Greer worked at Lyle's Place (a great indie CD store) in Victoria for a year, replacing Justin Hagberg, who had left for tour commitments with his band, 3 Inches of Blood.
Rebekah Higgs - We played with her at Halifax Pop Explosion this past year, then went out drinking with her at the Monotonix show. She had the best description of our band to date..."like cocks in your face with crazy transitions". She rocks!

In Windsor Ontario

Monday Night they host an Open Mic that cannot be beat. One that encourages new-comers and experienced musicians, poets and comedians alike, embracing, crossing and mixing genres and skill-levels. Whether you only play 'original material' or tried and true covers, you're welcome.

Tuesday Night they host the best traditional session in town. Possibly the only traditional session in town any more.

Friday and Saturday, they present the best of solo's, duo's and small bands from the Windsor/Detroit area, and occasionally enjoy larger names casting their shadow on the floor... John Allan Cameron raved about the place every time he played there.

Sunday they host a singer-songwriters workshop where all are welcome to gather and smith-words and tunes together.

To say nothing of the unwavering, equitable treatment they show their musicians even in financially troubled times such as these.

There are a few other good venues in Windsor, but for myself and for many others, The Kildare House takes the cake.

I've come to think that any attempt to find "the best" small venue in Canada is a fool's pursuit.

Just talking about what I know (Ottawa-Wakefield), there's not even any opposition between Eugene Haslam's great Zaphod Beeblebrox, in Ottawa's marketplace, and Paul Symes' Black Sheep (Inn) in Wakefield. Main differences (outside of 35 km and 180 ft altitude) are the acts: definitely more raucous and rocky at the former, and a folkier, broader palette at the latter. At that, Zaphods had Land of Talk recently...

Why should the Sheep compete with MoHo, with the Duncan Garage or with this or that Winnipeg spot, when there is no competition due to 2000 or 5000 miles?

In short, I think this contest should be turned into identifying the *crown* of dusty, chipped roccoco pearls that are our small venues: "The 25 best small venues in Canada".

The Almonte Old Town Hall, about 30 minutes west of Ottawa in the good 'ol Valley.

Yes, its my hometown, so I'm bias
BUT the acoustics are so good that Radio 2 has recorded MANY classical concerts there.

But its not just for classical concerts. I've seen Jim Bryson, Jenny Whiteley, and Sarah Slean among others there. Sarah Slean loved the Town Hall so much, she recorded some tunes for Baroness there.

What makes Phog Lounge one of the bestmusic vebues in Canada is the fact that it hosts some of the most talented up and coming artists in Canada, in an atmosphere that is comfortable and intimate. The bar tenders and owner are extremely friendly and they seem to be on top of bringing the people of Windsor entertainment that they cannot find any where else in the city. On top of all of this, it also lends its walls to local artist to display their talented art work. There is always something going on at Phog, something for everyone.

The CBC just spent who knows how many person-hours and taxpayer dollars on this this "Obama's Playlist" boondoggle (Hint: he's a very busy man, meaning he likely won't get to listen to it).

Why doesn't R3 sponsor a "25 Best Live Music Venues" project? There's a list that we can do something with. It can be a journey of sorts, a checklist of things for fans of live Canadian music to do before they die.

this is my favourite shit hole in the country. i can drink til im blind throw up everywhere and still come back the next night since i probably improved the smell of the barn"esque" bathroom.
Everywhere in the phog is front row , I love it, and tom does an amazing job convincing incredible acts and bands to come to our armpit of a city.
If windsor is the armpit of the country than phog lounge is the sweet snake tattoo wrapping around the arm and ending in that crevice!!!

Over the years, Windsor has had some decent venues that have hosted some great indie bands, but Phog is still standing. Intimate, friendly, and always packed, it's a great atmosphere for live music. They've done a great job of bringing in up and coming artists, and are strong supporters of local talent.

Although I am from Saskatoon and am a regular at Amigos Cantina for great food and Live Music, my vote is for The Times Change(d) High and Lonesome Club in Winnipeg MB. The first time I visited Winnipeg, my future wife took me there. I saw Luke Doucet, The Perpetrators, Romi Mayes, The D-Rangers and a whole whack of great Winnipeg musicians. I did far to many shots of Jim Beam, spent to much time in the basement, and then threw a rubber chicken across Main Street. The atmosphere is amazing with the the train yards and Main Street visible behind the stage, and the raw sound, it is like no other place I have been.

Undeniably one of the most unsuspecting venues in Windsor, Phog Lounge has been fortunate, regardless of its size and location, to have showcased some of the best and well-known talents far and wide. There have been some really great people coming through the doors, and it's even better when they want to stop by again whenever they're on the road! I'm sure it has to be comforting after touring for a while, to be able to arrive at a place where everyone is happy to see you. Phog is like no other.

Phog is hands down the best small club in Canada for seeing live music. I love the intimacy and the community feel it has. And the bands are amazing. Matthew Barber. Old Man Luedecke. Said the Whale. Brasstronaut. Kim Barlowe. Christina Martin. Hot Panda. The Sunparlor Players. Those are just some of the bands that I've seen at Phog in the last year and there are countless more shows I couldn't attend. Phog is a gem and is a vital part of our community.

It's got to be Amigos. Some other venues could have made my list, but have long since withered or turned into cheap lunch dives. But not Amigos, no sir. Still going strong, the joint may not be as smoky as it used to be, but it's still the premier stop between the rockies and Winterpeg. I think the heavy wave of excellent music emanating from the centre of the prairies has been encouraged largely by local shows at Amigos. Fond memories: local punks Porksword and their matching 18 wheeler cowboy shirts, and David Yow of Jesus Lizard yanking his junk out of a hole in his jeans on stage......

I nominate the Phog Lounge in Windsor, Ontario as the Best Live Canadian Indie Music Venue. Why? It has a legal capacity of about 60 people, so when you go to see Matthew Barber with the Spades, or Said the Whale, or the Pan Canadian New Folk Ensemble, or the Hilotrons, or Octoberman, or The Mohawk Lodge, or Pack A.D., or Lindy of Major Maker, or The Awkward Stage, or local Windsor Artists like Ron Leary, or James O-L and the Villains, or The Golden Hands Before God Conducts Incredible Magic Band & The Spirits, or Tara Watts, you really get to SEE them UP CLOSE and experience them with 55 or so of your friends and neighbors who are equally into Canadian Indie as you are, and NOT a crowd that may or may not be there to see the show, or may or may not stop talking loudly at the next table when your favorite artist is on the stage. And Frank and Tom are the coolest owners who enjoy the indie music scene as much as their "patrons" (read "friends" as they get to know everyone who comes in and make you feel welcome). And Jessica one of the friendly staff tends bar, makes awesome "Phog Phries" (the most delicious of fried potato sticks in the known world), and can also handle the door and merch table. I cannot describe how lucky I feel to have the Phog Lounge as a live Canadian Indie music venue right next door in Windsor, Ontario (just a quick trip through the tunnel from Detroit, Michigan).

I hope the searchlight swings to the southern most city in Canada and lands on the Phog Lounge.

Let's face it: this is going to be a high-school-style popularity contest where the club that gets the most friends to vote will probably win (especially since there'll be so much regional vote-splitting). If your favourite club makes the Top Ten, be proud, because a lot of work and passion will have had to heppen to earn that honour. Personally, as the Janitor/President of the scrappy little Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club located deep in the liver of beautiful downtown Winnipeg, I've shared a gloriously second-place life with a lot of good people and a whole mess of freakishly talented musicians for a very long time now, and I'm just fine with that...

It's hard to pick one in Wpg..there are a few great places to choose from, each with its own characteristics, benefits, and drawbacks. But I think I'd have to say The Royal Albert Arms because of the sheer power of being legendary and the Lo Pub as being the best newbie on the block:O)

Ok this may get a bit long but that’s alright. If we’re really talking about the best club in the country, then I can’t just spit out a venue name. Needless to say the economy has made it harder for any club in the country to thrive. In Windsor, a city that’s taken more than its fair share of hits, our local establishments turn to the time tested option of pandering to American college kids. The formula is simple: cease all live music, exchange the mics on stage with some poles, add some amateur hot body contests and before you know it they’re back in the black. Sadly, this practice has chipped away at Windsor’s live music possibilities. It is under these circumstances that the Phog Lounge has heroically stayed its course as a live music venue committed to bringing great music to its patronage. I’m sure you’ll hear plenty about the great events and programs that Phog puts on that both entertain and educate the community. Whether its the always insightful and informative PhogBlog, local independent film showings or book readings, Phog’s proprietors are continually challenging themselves to redefine what a live music venue can be. What do these things have to do with music? Simply stated, more than you could ever imagine. Its hard to explain, but it has something to do with vibe and atmosphere, space and sound, intellect and fun, you know, the stuff that makes a great song a great song.
Don’t get it twisted though, this isn’t a pretentious, arty-farty, condescending bar. Its still Windsor. Its still a place where any guy finishing his shift can come in and enjoy a beer.
During my visits to Phog I’ve witnessed local talent surprise me, and national acts floor me. I’ve seen local singer/songwriter Travis Reitsma hush the room with his rich toneful voice and I’ve seen You Say Party We Say Die play so hard that their instruments were literally pushing through the ceiling.
On a personal note, I’m a singer in a band and we recently played our first show at Phog. Not a big deal usually, but the circumstances definitely made it a bit unique. Phog’s co-owner Tom booked us on a prime Friday night even though he had only met me twice and heard maybe two of our songs. A week later he informed me that CJAM, the University of Windsor’s radio station, wanted that night for a big party. Our first-show-ever gig would have guaranteed Phog the obligatory friends and relatives audience, while the CJAM show would easily garner a full house. So what was his decision? “Sorry CJAM, these guys need to play their first show.” He told them that the only way they could get the night is if we agreed to play the show. They were game and we accepted. Being that it was our first show, we weren’t planning on even making up posters to promote it. Tom made it so that our first show ever was promoted on the radio for weeks. The place was packed and we went down a storm. When I told friends, who are veterans of playing clubs, this story them all marveled. I was told countless times to never expect that kind of treatment from any other club owner ever again.
Tom mentioned that Phog Lounge is the place that dreams begin, not necessarily where they come true. Speaking as a guy who has dreamt of what his first show would be like for a long time, Phog is definitely the beginning, and in a way, where it came true.
It is for these reasons and many others that I am nominating the Phog Lounge from Windsor, Ontario as the best live venue in Canada.

Hands down. Wonderful, stylish, well priced, fabulous staff and management, best friend of the local artistic community, and epic intimate venue. Where else can you see top notch Canadian music such as Stars, Final Fantasy, Immaculate Machine, Danny Michele (a lot haha) one night, see some incredible local talent (Bocce, Kidstreet, Knock Knock Ginger) the next, and then follow a show with one of their amazing theme nights (most of the time put on and organized by regulars of the place) such as 80's Zombie Prom, or the much anticipated Slutty Prom. Also, the regular Dj's are fantastic, and most are just local regular's/members of the community that have a knack for mixing, such as Waterloo's Global Warming crew, or Guelph's epic GOSHDAMN!, or even Toronto's Famous Players.

Also, a nod must go to the Jane Bond. Same owners, some of the same staff, same comments as above, always an awesome time, and a community that I dearly miss (on a weekly basis, haven't found the same 'feel' in Toronto yet).

As a university student I have to unique privilege of commenting on scenes in both Toronto and the lovably bizarre city of Windsor, Ontario.

As a sometimes resident of an outlying neighborhood in Toronto proper I don't go to too many shows in Hogtown. While a nod goes to the kitschy nature of The Smiling Buddha, last summer I went to a one off show at the Lucky Dragon in Chinatown. The owners didn't know what they were getting themselves into but by the end of the night they were having more fun than the 50 some-odd kids jammed in there.

When I'm in Windsor, I thoroughly enjoy going to Phog. They are huge supporters of the local arts scene beyond just music; the visual art community has also benefited from events held there as well. Because of the bands they regularly book and great atmosphere without the plastic people usually found in the Rose City I am proud to endorse Phog Lounge.

This little haven set just a block off the main strip in Windsor, is the best place to experience Indie music in the city.

Any day of the week, you can be entertained or inspired by musicians and artists from across this great country, or even from here in our own backyard.

Its a place where fans of all ages and backgrounds can gather and experience true, innovative moments that transcend the usual stereotypes or cliches found at other venues/bars in the city.

Tom and Frank (the owners) are always creative in their ways of promoting the Windsor scene as well as pushing the envelope in the way of the types of performers and performances you will see on any given day at Phog.

These crazy cats are always willing to lend a hand as well, on a continual quest to open people's minds to what's out there and possible when artists from all backgrounds bring their talents together.

and for toronto

the Horseshoe Tavern- it's hype and they can make the back wheelchair accessible. bartenders are best there and kip does amazing sound.

I only go to 2 clubs .One in Toronto and the other is the Phog Lounge.I have been to many clubs in North America in the past21 years and the Phog Lounge is by far the best live Music Venue period.
They also have the best Phog phries in the world.(but only when Frank makes them,Tom doesnt get em crispy enough)

Call the Office, London ON.
Its pretty much all London has going for it (except for Shad). Sometimes I'll take a bus from Toronto, so I can see the show at the Office even though the band will be in Toronto the next day. Once I ended up sleeping outside the London Greyhound station after a Defiance Ohio show just so I could see them at the Office.

The Black Sheep Inn of Wakefield QC is just fantastic. Despite the long drive it is definitely my fav. There is nothing like the atmosphere created by the beautiful nature, nice people, great beer (Mcauslan Cream Ale!!!!) and super fantastic music.
The fact that it is far out of town ensures that the audience is all people who are there for the music and not to get high and wasted. The audience is by far the most attentive I have ever seen. It lends itself to fantastical intimate shows.
The other unique features (already mentioned above) are the hilarious wandering pug, the picture window overlooking the Gatineau River valley, the quiet peaceful town environment and the little sign above the door - 'Be Nice or Leave'.
I hope it wins b/c they deserve it!

I would have to say that out of all the venues I have been to, big and small, the Grad Club wins hands down. The old house on the edge of Queen's University campus was the setting to some of my most memorable university nights. The manager Virginia Clark has amazing connections within the Canadian Music industry and as a result is able to get big hitters (Holy Fuck, BSS, Handsome Furs, The Cons, ect...) to come and play intimate shows for an appreciative audience. SIDE NOTE: She also puts together the amazing Wolf Island Music Festival in the Summer which also draws some great talent. Not to metion it is where some great acts have developed their skills, Jill Barber for example.

For the Grad Club and Virginia Clark to be overlooked in this Search for the best venue would be a terrible shame... Looking forward to seeing the short-list.

Don't even think about claiming you've got the number one live venue in Canada unless you can come close to hosting the acts that come through Phog.

With the intimacy of a small café, this place puts you centre front stage for the best acts in Canada.

Think you've been in the front row before, not like at Phog Lounge.

Ask the band at the next venue you visit what they think of Phog. They'll tell you too!

I have played many great clubs in Canada. The Phog Lounge in Windsor gets THE VOTE! Anyone who knows Windsor knows the deal! Tough city for music...way dark... Like the dakota tavern in Toronto, the clubs owners are great people who care about their community and take care of bands well. The place is a gift to southwestern Ontario!

THE VICTORIA FOLK MUSIC SOCIETY sUNDAY NIGHT COFFEE HOUSE IS IT!
It's been around for 34 years and hosts about 50 concerts a year. It holds 145 people and it's an acoustic venue. Plus there's no alcohol!! Plus we have an audience that really listens to what's being played. It's somewhat intimidating for a few musicians but loved by others.

toronto has its regular horseshoe fav and rivoli, but the dakota is my newer favourite discovery.

waterloo has the ones and onlys jane bond and starlight social club. they book great bands and have the best atmosphere. props to bernard et josh.

Best sounding place i found so far was Hugh's Room allllll the way in the west end.

we're voting for the best venues, but hey, we have to admit that its the acts we see there that add to the memorability!

The best live music venue in Canada, located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. From the kick ass staff to the amazing music they bring in, to the intimate surroundings, where one is likely to be having a shot with the band that just blew their mind. Did I mention the delicious tex-mex food served late? And can I hear you say Chicken toss?!?!

If you asked me a year ago I would have said the WECC but in the past year something special has happened in winnipeg and A great place to see a band or even just have a drink and play a game of scrabble has opended. So my vote goes, enthusiastically, to the Lo Pub & Gallery.

The Grad Club in Kingston is THE best live music venue in Canada!
there are amazing shows brought in, the staff is great, there is a great ever-changing selection of brew's, everyone at the show gets the full experience, no overcrowding.

I've been to a number of different music venues in southwestern Ontario, from Toronto - south - and many in Michigan. However, none with the warm and welcoming atmosphere that Phog Lounge has.

So much of the amazing music I have been turned onto has been from sitting at that bar, listening to CBC Radio 3, or a great CD, or satellite radio. Besides that, so often I've just been passing through only to be kept there for hours when I realize there is a band playing.

With a capacity of about 65 people, this lounge is just intimate enough. Mother Mother, Pallet, Patrick Watson, The Dudes, Co Co Love, and so many other great acts have played there.

So my choice.... Phog Lounge!!!

I'd vote for Zaphod Beeblebrox in Ottawa.
I've never been disappointed after seeing a show from this venue. Ever.
It's also Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy themed, far out man.

honestly, where else can you see so many of canada's top musicans in such a small and cozy venue? Virginia clark, the manager, has great taste (and connections, apparently) in music, and seems to always be able to book artists before they get bigger.

and when they aren't hosting great musicians, they're making unbeatable burgers.

great little club @ Bloor & Brunswick in Toronto. Friendly & inexpensive, 3 performance rooms, nearly non-stop live, (lots of acoustic) music all shapes & sizes.

Even before the Logan brother's bought the place, back when it was "Thursday's Sports Bar", it became the venue where local bands might have a place to work their stuff out. Because the family atmosphere is seriously dysfunctional, the misfit is the norm, so everything works. The Sunday Hootenanny has an absolutely terrible hostess.

The Blacksheep Inn (Wakefield, QC) has to be the best venue in Canada! Paul Symes has been bringing amazing live acts to the small Wakefield community for years. The venue offers an intimacy through it's cozy cabaret setup and relatively small capacity. You will find yourself seated a few feet from your favourite bands and songwriters.

The Sheep also boasts a beautiful view of the Gatineau Hills -- no matter which season you find yourself gazing out through the huge picture windows.

And, of course, many shows feature special appearances by Lucy the pug.

I recently returned to Waterloo, and serious consideration was given when choosing a new place to live: preferably within walking distance to the Starlight. Great vibe and fantastic bands (Kathleen Edwards 2/10!)

I also have to give a nod to the Grad Club in Kingston...intimate and funky.

(Now I have a list of great places I need to see when I travel, too!)

Sometimes the Comodore is just too big and cold and although they are lovely if you are not right at the front you cannot always see/hear at the Media Club/ Railway.

Yes they need a new P.A. and the bathrooms are scary, but you can see from anywhere in the room and when the sound is right it is amazing.

It will be a sad day for live shows in Vancouver when this institution finally gets torn down.

Certainly home to the absolute best live music scene in Canada! The Albert is an incredible room. Just watching a show does not happen here. Every person in the room is charged by the waterfall of sound flowing from the stage to the audience and back. Just check the website for the upcoming shows, Nobody does it better than Sam Smith, history is being made with each groundbreaking show that takes the stage. i don't think i need to mention the legendary shows of the past 25 years that have contributed the foundation of Winnipeg's music scene. The service at the bar is amazingly swift and the vegan food available in the Diner is the best in the city.

I've travelled this fair country for over 30 years playing music - the best club is the Times Changed in Winnipeg best , vine , best music, best crowd, best owner..and no! , I'm not from Winnipeg!

Not much Montreal feedback here. I will mention of few of my faves.

1. The Cabaret!! Used to be a ton of shows here, not too many anymore. Bring shows back to the Cabaret!!! Great sound, perfect size.

2. Le National. Great atmosphere, old school theatre. Spoon show last year blew my mind.

3. La Sala Rosa. Always great bands playing here. Great food in the restaurant underneath.

Between the hot pepper lights, the pictures of cowboys, and the window that perfectly frames the train going by, the character of this little bar in Winnipeg is unbeatable. Add a rubber chicken and MCing over a megaphone and you will have to agree that The Times Change(d) is the best music club around.

Has someone really not officially nominated the Ship? I am living in Montreal right now and I was thinking hard about what venue was my favourite. I've seen some great shows at lots of different places here in Montreal, but in terms of best venue, The Ship Inn in St. John's is #1 for me. It's beautiful and it makes you feel right at home.

BARRYMORE'S !!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, so it's been years since I've been there, holy..... about 20. The place was amazing when I saw David Wilcox there, two different shows. It has to make the top 5 list at the very least - I think it and The Horseshoe should tie for first.

The Rex Jazz Bar in Toronto has at least 2 shows a day of live music. With 3 shows on the weekend days. They are THE place for jazz in Toronto.

The Horseshoe brings out the best in bands. It's a combination of things, including the history, the promoter, the sound guy, the wait staff, and more. It's not a beautiful place, it doesn't have the best layout, but when it comes to pure energy, that venue pulls it out.

I'm with Genevieve. Lucky Bar is the best venue in Victoria and it just might be one of the best venues in the world. I love a high stage and a rectangle shaped room. I can hang in the back and listen to the band or go to the front and dance my ass off all the time being able to see the band. They also book live music every week and get heaps of great bands for a room that holds less than 500 people.

hands down the best by far is the Grad Club! it's just not the club, but who plays the club...take a look at the list of bands that have played, Rhostatics to Holy Fuck to Thunderheist to those damn dirty hippies on open mic nights.

Countless mind-blowing shows have gone down at this joint over the past several years. Excellent vibes- neat art all over the place, great lighting, extremely attentive crowds, relaxed performers and wicked staff make it the ultimate spot to see live music in Canada!

Nothing better than a summer night drinking yummy beers on the patio, after a swim in the beautiful Gatineau River, with the sun setting, torches lit and some great tunes starting up inside.

Very fun Sunday matinees for the little guys to get some early, up-close exposures to live music too!

my vote goes to Zooma Zooma Cafe. its located in Jordan Ontario, in the wine region. I love this place. Recently saw The Sicilian jazz project, and Carlos Del Junco. Great intimate atmosphere, seating is perfect for a gourmet meal with VQA wine and a great view of the stage. the energy is invigorating, dimly lit with spotlights shining right on the stars for the night. The staff is fantastic and really energetic! I recommend this hopping jazz hangout for anyone with real interest in great music. ticket prices,meals and wine very very well priced. good luck zooma zooma!!

this venue is great! ive been going to Zooma's music series for years. Flying in from my home in B.C. Im such a fan. the food is delicious, staff super friendly and inviting. The owner, Steve Del Col is a cool drink of water, former Toronto Argonaut player and jazz aficionado. The music selection is fantastic, seating is up close and very personal, and every concert is packed full of avid fans. Just recently saw Roy patterson, such a genious, among other great acts flocking to this hotspot. It may be in a small town, but Zooma Zooma rocks in a big town kind of way! if i could vote a million times i would certainly do so, i encourage fans of Zooma's to send their support.!!!

The Lo Pub in Winnipeg is awesome. It's intimate, friendly, the drinks are cheap and the bands are awesome. It's like seeing a show in your friend's basement.

Plus, it's a great place to hang out at even when there's not a show. I love sitting by the fire and playing board games on a show-less night.

Live music every weekend. Great atmosphere right in the heart of Vancouver Island. Has been around for over 100 years in Cumberland, BC. Big names play this small venue all the time due to the stellar atmosphere. Check out the upcoming lineup.....
