I really really really can't choose.

It'd be between Jenn Grant, Shout Out Out Out Out, Immaculate Machine, K'Naan, and The Joel Plaskett Emergency, with honourable mentions to pretty much everyone else so far on that list!

I also will put out there that the odd year thing seems to be holding up. 2008 was pretty good, but thinking back to how good 2007 was, I think 2008 didn't stack up. Of course there are exceptions, lots of great albums last year, but overall, not as good as I'd hoped.

Out of everything listed up there, the one that gave me that tingly feeling that only comes from hearing that one of your favourite bands is releasing a new album would have to be Two Hours Traffic. I can't wait for that to come out, I've listened to and beaten around my Little Jabs CD so much I needed to make a copy for the car.

Other releases that really stand out for me are:
- MSTRKRFT
- The Awkward Stage (These guys must be busy, didn't we just get a new album a couple months ago?)
- The Danks
- Immaculate Machine
- Destroyer

Of course, there are many others in that list that I will likely get my hands on but these are topping my shopping

I'm really anxious to hear the new album by The Novaks. I know it was recorded last July. They had Gordie Johnson produce it. I heard that it sounds great and that it's really loud. But I haven't heard about a release date. I'm hoping something will surface about it at the ECMAs. Let me know if you know something?

I would love any of those albums, but I WILL buy any Canadian indie band who plays SOMEWHERE in Finland any European tour they do.

to artists out there: Finland is a GREAT place, they love music here - and not just metal.

I'm looking forward to Jenn Grant, Joel Plaskett Emergency, Ohbijou, Immaculate Machine and Grand Analog.
Which format, most likely a mix of CD and iTunes download. It depends if they come to Ottawa for a gig. Usually my bro buys them on CD at the gigs.

Luckily, no Weakerthans on the list. Phew, thank goodness. Oh whoops, that would rile up Grant and Amanda. ;)

So many to choose from. Top 5 runners up for me are K'Naan, Metric, Joel Plaskett, Two Hours Traffic andAC Newman.

But my #1 is Jon-Rae Fletcher. If his new backing band is still Alpha Baby, it'll be cool to see how they sound together.

Maybe Smith (LONG awaited by this prairie lily) and Rolf Klausener's solo project, also eagerly anticipated.

I've heard Jenn's and it's AMAZING but I can't wait to hear Jon-Rae's and some new THT too!

Immaculate Machine.

I'm so excited for this one. All I listened to last summer was their old stuff, and it will be great to start hearing some new songs from these guys.

Oh man, such great music this year. I would have to say Shout out out out out is my most anticipated as I am expecting and hoping for a wicked release party for it. They didn't do a new years show this year but a new album will make up for that. The new Joel Plaskett triple album should be good too especially if it brings him out west to tour.

For 2009, I'm looking for a group that isn't on that list. Probably a new band (or one just under the radar) subtly releasing a totally killer album that I will sing in my head for years.

I spent 2 months in Finland (Turku) last year, nice scene. Only place I've seen heavy metal karaoke! Danko Jones was pretty big there at the time, and I saw Raised Fist in a club... wild.

Judging by that list, there's a lot of awesome there!

I am most feverishly awaiting Joel Plaskett's "3".

And Joel, if you're reading this, I sincerely hope the vinyl version of this comes out in a triptych f sorts… you know… gatefold 3 panel goodness. That would be all kinds of awesome.

I certainly can mock you something up.

Man this year's releases is going to make my musical resolutions easy to keep at.

AC Newman would top my list. Everything he's touched in the last 10 years has been amongst the most critically acclaimed music in the world that year. My next most anticipated group of albums would probably be by Jim Guthrie, Joel Plaskett, Swan Lake, Tegan and Sara, and Destroyer. But I'm also really looking forward to the ones by In-Flight Safety, Jenn Grant, Woodpigeon, Portico, Josh Reichmann, Julie Doiron, The Danks ... heck, let's just say that there are very few bands on that list that I'm not looking forward to. And I always like to be surprised. Every year there are a couple of great albums that seem to come out of nowhere. And I still have several major albums top catch up on from last year!

wow you are unlucky. It's a great album and I saw him play it at the Ottawa bluesfest this summer. Probably the best concert I saw this summer. Smooth transitions between songs and amazing studio like precision.

Lots of good 2008 music, of course, but relative to the 2-3 years before-- it was a bit lean. Seemed like the good singles made it out, but not as many great consistent albums. On that note, can't wait to hear the new K'naan, MSTRKRFT, Joel Plaskett, Andrew Vincent, & Malajube. High expectations for all & I'd be really surprised if any of these let me down.
What I really want is to discover a new band I missed before that already has a few albums (and maybe one on the way too), to keep me occupied for a while.

2008 somehow became the "Year of Joel" for me (which was awesome), so the JPE's new disc, "3", probably tops my list.

I was first introduced to Shout Out Out Out Out when they did the Sessions, um, session here on R3, so I'll be happy to hear more from them.

So many good bands/albums listed up there...

Two Hours Traffic and more Tegan & Sara to round out the year? Yes, I'd agree... 2009 is looking to be quite the year musically!

I've got tickets for their show at St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit on Feb. 28. Can't wait! (It was either go to the concert or spend the weekend at the Waugoshance cabin at Wilderness State Park near Mackinac... hmm, tough choice!)

My sister (enerie on the R3 blogs) had Andrew Sisk on her college radio show yesterday, so I got the scoop on his new album. It's being mastered right now and they plan to release it in August. One exciting detail was that they are pressing a few EPs with a selection of the new songs to take with them to UK and Germany this winter. Wouldn't I like to get my hands on one of those!
You are going to love the new sound of the band. Share has evolved from a folk band of one, to a trio, and they've since picked up two new members, so the sound is fuller, heavier, more complex.

I didn't realize you played The Weakerthans "for me" as I was reading a message board at DC Comics' website. I didn't look at the playlist when I spoiled myself to read that Batman is dead.
I did not and won't be able to get the Amazing Spider-Man issue with Barack Obama appearing.
There's no complaining from me. ;)

The real reason I am not fond of the Weakerthans is that I am not big on Civil Twilight and the "Jennifer Jason Leigh" part. I always have to mute the song when it's played.
I still have Night Windows on my iPod touch and on the Canadiana playlist. It's one song I can stand to listen. :)

This year does look pretty incredible...your list and few of the addition hear are definately on my most excited for list. i.e Julie Doiron, Maybe Smith, Ohbijou, Great Lake Swimmers, Rolf Klausner, Portico, Jon-Rae and Bruce Pennisula

I know it's not Canadian, but one that is not and is the Lord Cut-Glass album, it's Alun Woodward from the Delgadoes new solo-ish project. The Delgadoes has been one of the bands I perpetually look up, but never seem to have gotten the attention they deserved and from the bits I've heard of Alun's new project, he's continuing to make incredible music, so hopefully people get a chance to hear some of it.

I know of a Diamond Head in Honolulu (it's a crater) and one in Mississippi. Those are the two I know of. I bet there's many many.

To be honest I'm pumped for all of those sure to be great albums, but I have to give big ups for the new Jon-Rae; the first since the tragic River breakup. Also one I didn't see on the list was the new Andre Ethier, he was on Q last week pluging it, where is the synergy R-3?

My bad,

I looked into the Andre Ethier sitch, turns out his new albulm "Born On Blue Fog" (apparently part of a "Blue Fog" trilogy) came out in december. In the interview with Jian, Andre mentioned he was releasing his Blue Fog records on Vinyl sometime in the new year. Sorry for the confusion R-3, Grant you are always on your game.

Dan Mangan will be releasing his long awaited second album in July/August 2009 and Doug Randle's long forgotten 1971 gem "Songs For The New Industrial State CD" will be released on January 27, 2009 for the first time on CD on Light In The Attic records.
