Hey, great interview. Just a correction-- that 2005 speech is Paul Martin's, not Stephen Harper's. It's a beautiful speech, but I can't imagine Harper ever making it. Harper's speech on C-38 instead included "Fundamental human rights are not a magician's hat from which new rabbits can constantly be pulled out. Same-sex marriage is not a human right." I can't find a direct quote online, but one site had Harper saying that being gay is a behaviour, not an identity. So... that's our PM.

Prop 8's passing made me sad on a lot of levels. Part of it was that, even without being Californian, American or particularly gay, Prop 22's defeat earlier this year really made me happy. The joy of all these couples who'd waited so long for their relationships to be recognized was so infectious, you know? To have that so quickly taken away must be so hard. But also, later that day I had a conversation with a Canadian classmate, who said she was happily surprised to find that California wasn't so "...open to ...that." She said she was ok with gay men getting married because they "couldn't help it" but definitely not girls, who everyone knows are "just confused." Me: "... what?" It was a bit of an eye-opening conversation-- Canada's not always as progressive as I'd like to think.

She wasn't even religious, or Albertan!

I was dissatisfied with comments made in this interview.
She discussed how the passing of proposition 8 was "Devastating for people here in California" The fact that this passing was through the democratic process, and was voted upon, show that the majority of Californians were not devastated. The decision was made by the people of that state..
She also states in regards to the money spent on both sides, it is "important that that doesn't go to waste" Seeing as one side had to win, the money did not go to waste. It just did not convince enough people, or "educate" as she calls it, that proposition 8 should not be passed. For all those who support proposition 8, the money was well spent. Also, just because a person does not believe that "gay people should get married" does not mean that they are uneducated or ignorant, as Tegan suggested. The moral issue of homosexuality and heterosexuality will not change with people getting so called educated on the topic.
I hope to see CBC presenting both sides of this issue, so that people may be well informed to the whole issue.
