I can't believe it, I truly can't believe it, but I'm bailing on dressing up for Halloween. I love dressing up and going out, but for some reason I'm just not into it this year. Like Milli Vanilli, I am blaming it on the rain.

Costumes aside, I'm still in the Halloween spirit and am having people over to watch scary movies. The thing is, I am a chicken and don't own any. This is why I need your help.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 3 SCARY MOVIES AND ONE SISSY ONE!?

We're talking scream out loud/ pee your pants/ may not be able to sleep until Monday movies, and then that one you think I can watch.

Lana, the key to any scary movie night is the blanket fort! Trust me they can get fairly elaborate. In terms of movies you can't beat the Exorsist. But for funny ones Army of Darkness, House, Chucky, Ghost ship are pretty funny in their own ways.

I haven't seen many scary movies either, but I think the first Hallowe'en movie is really good. There is also this disturbing Canadian movie from the 70s I once saw called Black Christmas, that was pretty good. In fact, there is another old Canadian horror movie called My Bloody Valentine, it's pretty funny. It's not too scary, but the characters are all oh so Canadian. As for a sissy movie... Evil Dead?

I work at an outdoor centre and this time of year things are pretty quiet. I dread going to the empty dinning hall kitchen, even in broad daylight because of the movie "The Shining." It is terrifying - if I need a go scare it is my movie of choice. As for fun scary movies - I love watching Rocky Horror Picture Show! It's a tradition for me to watch it every Halloween.

Lana, I usually Love Love Love scary movies. One movie that is just too scary for even me is 'House of 1000 Corpses' (Rob Zombie) I tried to watch it recently and turned it off mid way through for fear I would have trouble sleeping.

On halloween, why don't you watch the classic Halloween.

Ok and now for funny, Shawn of the Dead or another classic, Rocky Horror picture show.

Have to say Rosemary's baby is a classic horror without all the gore and for you I would recommend nightmare before christmas .. come on a skeleton that sings.. what can beat that?!

I think it depends on what stage of life you're in. I haven't seen a movie that really scared me since childhood when I got freaked the f**k out by The Shining, The Omen, and the original Amityville Horror.

I guess 28 Days Later had it's moments.

Clearly you've already seen Shaun of the Dead, right?

The scariest movie I've seen in recent years has to be The Orphanage. I watched through my fingers and my friend weeped a little - not kidding.

Lana, one of the scariest movies I have ever seen in my life is The Candyman. You think that it is a fitting time for this time of year, handing out candy and all, but no, all that movie did was hand me nightmares. I seriously had a hard time looking in the mirror for months after...granted I was in my early teens. Second would have to be Arachnophobia. I don't care what people say about that movie, it is freaking scary! Last but not least, we have The Silence of the Lambs...that was a great movie. It was well written, well shot, everything about it was amazing. If you want a sissy movie, why not try Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! What the hell is an Oompa Loompa? And why in god's name is it making candy for children? So they can lure them into vans while offering everlasting gobstopers...think about it, it was a scary movie. Nevermind those scenes where you take a "trip" with Charlie through those psychedelic tunnels and what not. IT WAS A SCARY MOVIE!!!

I have about 3 friends in my apartment building who are huge movie nerds. One works at a video store, one's a film student and the other just collects. Usually I just add 'buster' to the end of their first name when I walk in and borrow dvds. It'll be okay, I just want to have a good list to go with.

I don't watch scary movies. I am the biggest chicken. In the spring my friend finally talked me into watching the Shining. I lived alone at the time and refused to be left alone after that so we ended up sitting on a riverbank until the next morning.

I currently live in a big creaky old heritage building kind of place. I can't imagine watching a scary movie here.

Heck, I can't even watch Lost if it's dark outside and I'm alone!

...So in answer to your question... I guess I'm not very helpful today...

The Exorcist - Honestly, what I like about this film is the simplicity. No crazy jittery effects. You can practically smell the evil.

The Shining - Whoa. It's all about racing around a creepy old hotel on a Big Wheel.

Blair Witch - After going to see this, my wife beat me into the house and stood in the corner of the kitchen facing the wall. I didn't see her at first, and then I practically fainted.

Whimpy eh? Hmmm. Have to think about it.

My fave scare films are Carrie and The Shining psychological fear at it's best, also I agree with that other persons suggestion. Roman Polanski's "Rosemary's Baby" makes Hitchcock look like a comedian.

One of my top horror movies that just creeped me out was Session 9, I think it was really well done. Not even that much gore or anything like that, it just keep build this super creepy atmosphere.

The first remake of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre was really well done too. And The Strangers! That was creepy.

For some wimpy ones
The Re-animator (not scary but a great great b-horror movie)
Ginger Snaps (Canadian werewolves and heavy allegory for puberty!)
Dog Soliders (The costumes in this just made me crack up)
and of course, I have to throw out the Evil Dead I & II and Army of Darkness.

I just gotta ask, what do people find scary about Rosemary's baby? I finally watched this movie cause it's hyped up almost as much as the Exorcist (which deserves it's hype).
It was boring, and awful and not scary one bit. So, I was wondering if you guys that found it scary can tell me what you found scary about it? I just want to understand why it's so hyped, maybe I missed something...

(also, Sleepaway Camp. Like wtf? If you removed the few horror scenes it felt like Ernest goes to camp without Ernest.)

It's true, I'm a big time horror (and Godzilla) movie nerd. Drives my friends nuts cause if there's a horror movie in theatres, I want to see. If we rent a movie, I keep suggesting horror movies the entire time.
Still haven't seen Quarantine, gonna see it next week with a friend.

It's exciting, this is one of the few nights my girlfriend is actually into watching horror with me! I feel as happy as a Star wars nerd on Skywalker ranch.

I never know at what point a bad horror movie goes from bad to funny. For some reason I was laughing all the way through "Lake Placid". No one else in the theatre was. I got some funny looks from the people around me, but Betty White was so funny in that movie and the rest of it is so cliche... I don't know if it's acknowledged by anyone else as having "Camp" status yet but I thought so.

Hmmmm.

For scary flicks, I'd have to say my top three would be:

Event Horizon. Holy crap, who knew space was so frickin scary. I'm never going up there. At least not on some demon spaceship that disappeared and came back missing all the astronaughts.

The Shining. Classic.

The Haunting. This is from the 60's and has no gore, no special effects. Just one really suspenseful psycological trip. Unfortunately it was remade into a really bad movie a while back. Go for the original.

Cheesy movie? How about Black Sheep. The Kiwi accent on its own is enough to keep me entertained for 90 minutes, but throw in some genetically modified sheep that go on a rampage and eat a lot of New Zealanders and you've got a film!

The scariest movies I've actually watched: Itt, Se7en and The Skeleton Key. I only watch about one a decade, I guess! For scary-themed movies that aren't actually scary and thus did not traumatize me, I'd say I Know What You Did Last Summer or for something more obscure The Blood Spattered Bride. They're more ridiculously bad than scary.

I may totally hate and get freaked out by horror movies, but I forgot about one that I saw with my boyfriend at the time and his brother that was in the "so bad it's funny" genre.

It was that British one about the women who get lost in the caves... crap what was it called. Anyway, they were laughing so hard the whole time that I actually saw past the gory horror of it and realized that it was not in fact scary, but hilarious.

It might be worthwhile Lana.

But I still don't like horror movies.

I was totally going to mention sleepaway camp as a wimpy movie.
I work at a summer camp and I've seen that movie so many times. No matter how terrible and cheesy it is, the ending always scares me. always.

I saw this movie back when it was new I think. No time for plot, just throw a random creepy monster with some teens trapped in a cave. Seriously, no real plot, no explanations. It was hilarious.

Aside from Jurassic Park when I was little, the only movie that's ever given me a real scare was 28 Days Later.

One of the opening scenes, where the monkey leaps out of its cage and latches onto the woman's face... and the camera jolts and the film takes on a deep red cast... is pretty scary.

Seeing someone get mauled by an angry monkey and then vomiting blood from a head jerking violently around? Sure to give a scare!

Eraserhead is scary, but in a totally unusual way. It is not a conventional horror. But it will haunt you.

And I too am not a fan of scary movies. And I maintain there is nothing wrong with that. It doesn't make me any less of a man.

It's the fondness of mini-skirts that does that.

I thought I'd mention it just in case but don't see "Jeepers Creepers"
That movie is awful, it is at the top of list of worst movies I've seen. As soon as it ended I told my brother "I want those two hours of my life back"

I still don't know what it is about that movie that rubbed me the wrong way so much, but it's on my bad side for all time.

Oh, and if you can handle some gore Land of the Dead is a great newer Zombie movie by Romero, but Dawn of the Dead (not the remake) still is my favourite zombie movie.

Or you can see what aclaimed director Peter Jackson was up to before Lord of the Rings in his movie Dead Alive. I won't say much except that it's got more fake blood than Lake Ontario has water

How about Phantom of the Paradise for a fun movie? Not only is it an awesome movie, it has awesome music! It couples pretty well with Rocky Horror.

And then for good measure you could throw in some Hedwig and you'll be singing all night.
