Monday Morning, July 7, 2008.

At 11am ET Monday morning, an hour considered ungodly by most musicians, CBC Radio 3’s own Grant Lawrence along with 2007 Polaris winner, Patrick Watson, unveiled the shortlist for the 2008 POLARIS PRIZE. Standing in front of Canada’s leading musical artists and industry at the Drake Hotel in Toronto - and broadcasting to the rest of Canada via CBCRadio3.com – Grant revealed the ten hopeful Canadian indie artists who hope to win the $20,000 prize.

Here they are, in all their glory:

Let me be the first to say that Wintersleep, yet again, was fucking robbed of something so well deserved. Next thing you know they'll be carting around a grammy, and there'll be a slew of Canadians with cocked eyebrows.

I think the Cons and Buck 65 should have both been on there. I also think Stars "In Our Bedroom After the War" was a stepback from their last LP, so I don't think it should have been on there.
I am really happy for Shad though. The old price is a great album.

is anyone else as surprised as I am that Islands didn't make the cut?
Have to agree about Wintersleep, and while there are a few great songs on Stars' In Our Bedroom After The War, I don't think the album as a whole was as impressive as some of their other ones.

Very happy Two Hours Traffic made it though! I was almost sure they'd be forgotten.

I must agree with others and say I am surprised not to see Wintersleep in the shortlist. However, that being said there were a number of talented musicians in the long list and for sure there were going to be some surprises. I just didn't think it was going to Wintersleep that was overlooked. I thought they would be a shoe-in.

Where's the Protest the Hero? Cadence Weapon?
Another list that's primarily safe indie-rock.

Granted, Wintersleep probably should have held a spot on the short list, but honestly, and on a much lighter note...
I'm ridiculously pumped for Two Hours Traffic. Little Jabs really is an incredible album. It pretty much hasn't been removed from my CD player since I bought it when, last July? Go boys go! Yay!

I was driving home from work today, no idea who made the Shortlist, listening to Two Hours Traffic. And I was thinking, "Wow, these boys made a classic album." I can't say that about any of the other albums, though I haven't heard a few still. Seriously, give them the award!

How on earth did Stars, 2hrs traffic, Kathleen Edwards & The Weakerthans beat out the Constantines and Destroyer??????....... I hope Holy Fuck wins too!!!

Having a quick look at the top 10, other then the Stars (Sorry, last album was better), all the albums mentioned are great albums, and worthy of any press they get. Say what you want - safe indie rock, but both the Kathleen Edwards and Basia albums are terrific, and can hold there own. Toss in Black Mountain, Holy F**k, Weakerthens and the rest, and you have my all dream all Canadian ipod mix. However, Destroyer should be there...
