For those of you who care about the continuing saga of the Buckys (no,
not the Radio 3 award but the softball team named after them), I have sweet,
sweet news. Our game against The White
Whale ‘Wailers’ (I can only assume that’s how their team name is spelled) ended
in victory. More importantly, that
victory was for us.
Firstly, in the tradition of Homer, a few words building up
our opponents to make our victory seem all the more glorious. The ‘Wailers’ is a fierce East Vancouver team
composed of musicians hailing from Mohawk Lodge, Octoberman, Panurge, Blood Meridian, and The
Choir Practice. Their ‘Hector’, Ryder
Havdale, looks like someone that normally captains oil tankers, or perhaps a
pirate ship. More daunting than this,
Marc Morrissette, under the pseudonym Octoberman, was actually nominated for a Bucky (the
award, not the team) for ‘Best Song to Listen To In The Fetal Position’. Do I even need to mention they had Shira
from Blood Meridian/Choir Practice?
Didn’t think so.
Of course, our own Buckys also had a member from the Choir
Practice. And thanks to Chris Kelly’s
salacious behaviour on home plate against AdBusters two weeks ago, we also had
one of their members on our team. Our
own Phil Rabin clocked a few into next week – all the while fashionably decked
out in a button up dress shirt. Our
start player Dave (who works for Radio 3 in spirit) spent every batting round
trying to send the ball into a nearby beach volleyball game (about three
football fields away). Eventually the
volleyball players threatened to ‘rush the pitcher’ if it happened again.
When the dust cleared the final tally was an astounding: 27 –
14. The Buckys can finally attend shows
in the fair city of Vancouver
without the shame of never having won a game.
In honour of such a momentous occasion, here is Octoberman
“Run From Safety” - A song which undoubtedly the ‘Wailers’ will be listening to
today.
…in the fetal position.
