The last time my friend, Oscar Tillman, visited from Stockholm Sweden, he challenged me to take him out to a raucous dance night. Not just any jiggy night would impress this Scandinavian rocker. It would have to be big. It would have to be bold.

Then the angels graced us because Montréal's best grime and hip hop DJ, Ghislain Poirier, happened to be playing that night. We put on our white jeans, rounded up a few soldiers, hopped on our bicycles, and set out for what was one of the most aerobic nights of dancing I've ever experienced. This was a matter of two (sober!) elements which together, make for a killer combination: sheer cardiovascular endurance, and fat dirty beats. We gyrated, shook, and rocked out for five hours straight. Needless to say, I had difficulty walking the next day.

Monsieur's Poirier's beats are so dirty they give hockey uniforms a run for their money. Each beat that drops is so thick, so dense; hearty, and filling, that they're practically edible...like a mille-feuille - a pastry of one thousand layers. I hereby propose we refer to this particular genre of 'the hip hop music' as "mille-feuille". Whadd'ya say kids?

My pick for Track of the Day is called "Jusqu'en Haut" and it's off of Ghislain's latest album, No Ground Under, and features Omnikrom.
