Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the Polaris Prize Live Gala may have been closed to the public, but have no fear, we'll take you inside Toronto's Phoenix Concert Theatre to give you a front row seat of the entire proceedings.

Just like our regular podcast, by some horrible mistake I somehow ended up as host of the entire thing. The only difference is this week it won't just be you and me... there will be a bunch of other people in the room, all dressed up.

So put on your best tuxedo t-shirt and enjoy live performances from such nominees as the Besnard Lakes, Julie Doiron and Eric's Trip, Miracle Fortress, the Joel Plaskett Emergency, Chad VanGaalen, and Patrick Watson.

I don't want to be rude but the music on this new radio station has less variety than a mainstream Pop/rock radio station. I've heard the new new pornographers song so much I almost know all the words. What happened to the Techno/Rap/guitar folk?

I've enjoyed the hosts to this point, but it does seem a little weak. Many of them seem to run through very similar playlists. For instance, I feel like I've heard "The Con" at least three times this afternoon already (though I can't be sure). I guess if you listen as often as I have been (weekdays at work) you tend to hear a lot of the same features and stories too.

I'm wondering what sort of controls the dj's have over the playlists though. Considering we can see what's playing for at least the next half hour or so (including their windows to speak) there's got to be at least that much time before anything they program *now* will actually be played. (Though I actually have no real idea how it actually works, so who knows...)

I wonder if they have the ability to see what has played recently though. I know I'd find it infinitely useful to have some sort of playlist (beyond what's coming up). Sometimes I can't get to the computer in time to see what the name of that great track was, and if the song ends you're out of luck. (I guess this is where those dj's come in handy...)

Considering their playlists are sometimes as unvaried as the Polaris short list, I wonder if this fault is due to being unable to review what has been recently played. Or maybe they're still just getting the hang of this open format. Maybe in the future there could be a conscious effort to include more varied and different styles of music. New Music Canada is a bountiful source of amazing music.

I find in the evening the stream offers a little more variation.

ah, hit submit before I organized some of those final thoughts. anyways, I really don't mean to complain. I do still recognize that this is a free (relatively new) way of getting the music out there, and I definitely appreciate it! (I just meant to offer some feedback...)

But anyways, this is in a Polaris thread originally, so all I really wanted to say is:
I'm very happy that Patrick Watson won. :)

Although they don't really fit the article/topic, I have to say that both of you have some good points here. I think that these sorts of discussions are good ones to have as this new medium is being shaped.

Less canned! More diverse! I'm sure these are principles that all of us can agree on... so it's good to talk about them.

I have to say that having listened to the new web radio for a bit now just how little the playlists seems to vary in character from dj to dj or day to day. Can you folks on the other side of the mic speak a little to how it works, and what you think of it? I imagine that with all this new stuff going on over there at our favourite broadcaster that you might all be spread pretty thin!

Oh, and congratulations, Patrick Watson! :)

Hey all, thanks for the comments!

We're still in our opening chords at this point so bear with us for a few weeks. But there are some things we should explain.

We definitely don't want to sound like commercial radio - but - we might want to play a Tegan and Sara song or a Weakerthans track more than once a day. We assumed some of our listeners wake up early; some wake up late. We didn't want to deny the guy working the night shift the new songs just because he wasn't up early enough. Keep in mind that we play music 24 hours a day - an average 360 songs - so hearing Pink Mountaintops twice really just means it’s your lucky day.

We didn't realize that a lot of people tune in for the whole day (a point in itself that makes our Director Steve Pratt a little more jovial when yelling at us). However, we promise that you shouldn't be hearing tracks back- to- back. Sometimes it happens because we have a lot of hosts in a few different cities - but we are trying to control it - give us a bit more time and we’ll work it out.

We also live for the "new and emerging" artists. When Polaris is on, our hosts want to play Polaris nominees; when a CD has been released, we all jump on it; when an artist is on tour, we want to support it. It might make for some of the host shows sound similar but we are really just looking to shout this stuff from the rooftops.

Anyway, keep the comments coming. We’ll keep tuning the station if you keep tuning in.

What was that Chad VanGaalen tune that starts with "Sleep all day"? I've been looking up the discography and there sure are a number of tunes about sleeping/ dying - favorite title has to be 100 pound eyelids - but I can't work out what that song from the live performance is.

This podcast belongs in the "Special podcasts" category!!
I know this whole Polaris week probably kept Grant and the whole gang at CBCR3 busy like squirrels in november but Friday at work without a "regular" podcast simply SUCKS! Oh, that and this darned "Content Keeper" my employer installed, preventing me from streaming anything. Ugh.
