Some of the instruments I have often said I'm particularly drawn to include the banjo, slide guitar (and pedal steel), cello, glockenspiel to name a few - when these instruments are in a song, my ear perks up. Oh yeah, handclaps too - love the handclaps.
But today I say: add horn section to the list. Now, it's not a new or original idea to use horns in a pop song, but in If You Wanna Go, the horns are excellent. I love how the trumpet harmonizes with the vocal line in the verses for one thing. That's cool.
I only found out about this Vancouver band a month or so ago and I have to say thanks to my friend Ken (from my old hometown of Calgary) for introducing me to The Western Investor. He brought them to my attention right around Christmas and I've been digging their album This Beautiful Town ever since. Have a listen to If You Wanna Go and see if you do indeed wanna....go...buy the record, dance around, air-horn, whatever. I think you'll like it.
