In 1982 I was non-existant. In fact in 1982 my mom was 15 and my dad was like 23.

In 1992 I was 2 ... I knew the alphabet and was obsessed with Beauty and the Beast.

In 2002 I was in grade 7 I got glasses, had bad hair and was really into American Idol? ...God that's embarassing.

Also this show makes me feel REALLY young...

1982: I did not exist

1992: I was in third/fourth grade, and i'm not positive, but I think that's the summer I was on an extended vacation with my mom to Europe. We were in London most of the time, but also went to Scotland and Norway. We were there so long I ended up going to school in London for a month.

And '92 was the year that both Batman & X-Men animated series' debuted, so I was super into both of those.

In 1992, I was 11 and sassy. Likely had a bad haircut. My teacher flipped my desk upside down in anger once. For some reason he thought I talked too much.

In 2002, I was entering my 3rd year of university. That year was my favourite of my Journalism degree..

Where was I in 1982?

Well, half my genetic code was dormant in one of my mother's ovaries. The other half of my genetic code was still various, scattered atoms. A year later, those atoms and pre-existing genetic materials came together and started building a creature that has since become me.

In 1982 I was 4 - working on sharing with my 2 year old brother, riding a tricycle, singing Puff the Magic Dragon while on the swingset.

In 1992 I was in grade 9 and 14 - just getting into watching hockey, finding my own music (which was mostly Top-40) and generally being rather dorky

Wasn't quite born yet ini 1982. In 1992 I was living in Kincardine, Ontario, probably just starting school. I think I liked playing in the park behind our house and swimming in our pool/Lake Huron.

2002 was the year I moved to the US. I thought I was punk but was mostly into terrible mainstream pop punk bands.

'82 - not born yet

'92 - I was 8...and my youngest brother was born. So...Port Colborne, Ontario...bein' 8 years old. What's that, Grade 3?! OOO! I liked that grade, at St Patrick Elementary school.

My headache is still lingering. I might have to nap later.

In 1982, I was 28 and running a bookstore in Cleveland, Ohio. I enjoyed David Bowie's music, but wasn't yet familiar with Canadian rock n' roll. As a bookseller I caught the wave of new literature coming from Canada that was also suddenly making a major impression in the States. This includeded the work of such Canadian authors as Robertson Davies, Margaret Atwood, Margaret Laurence, Timothy Findley, Farley Mowat, and Pierre Berton. Reading and selling books by literary artists was a thrill at the time. The notoriety and excellence of Canadian authors is now to a degree taken for granted, but this wasn't true thirty years ago. I'm glad I was able to participate in making CAN-lit better known in the States.

1982 - I was in Ottawa. I was 8. I was running and yelling at the top of my lungs most of the time. Sometimes I climbed trees. I rode a bicycle a lot. Spent the summers in Germany.

1982:non-entity

1992:7 yrs old, I was really into the Payola$ (rocking out in my booster seat in the back of my dad's volvo.

2002: My year of musical discovery: a friend's brother introduced me to this band, they had released an album called 'Quiet Collision'. (they are can-con, guess who?!) It took me away from the local classic rock station and into new uncharted musical territory. It was great.

I was 5 and was growing up in Summerside, PEI, where I spent my time riding my bike, skipping rope, playing barbies, and watching Mr. Dressup, Sesame Street, The Friendly Giant, and all the other great tv shows that aired at that time. It was a great time to grow up - outdoors all the time and only basic technology!

1982: I was conceived. Pretty exciting.

1992: I was nine. I was into leaving school quickly to avoid the kids who said they were going to beat me up after school. Also, math. And Girl Guides.

2002: University! I met, dated, and broke up with my first boyfriend. Also started drinking, largely because it was first boyfriend's main hobby, though I never took it up to the degree he did. In December, I had mono.

I don't know why my brain is going to the depressing bits of those years. They had good bits too. For instance: in 2002 I joined the Bnad [sic], which would turn out to vastly improve my university experience.

1982. I was 31, divorced, working in a suburb of Denver, Colorado, having moved from California in 1978. I was working for a major railroad in the property tax (yawn) department. I owned a house, the then unnamed Shaggin'Wagon was only four years old, and I was still making the $231.51 monthly payments (at 15% interest!).

1982 was a pretty lonely time in my life, far from home in California, few friends, and I felt my biological clock was ticking. And had a dickens of a time meeting anyone, although that all changed in 1983.

I was in college then and going to every new wave / punk show that came to Detroit.... the music scene seemed to be exploding with new and super creative artists. many of the original punkers where still in their prime. it was a blast back then

Where was I in 1992?

I turned 8 that year. I'm an October baby so I would have started Grade... 3(?) that year.

Pretty sure that's right. If so, that was actually a really tumultuous year for my family.

We started the year in Brantford. The first 3/4 of the year aren't anything special, or I can't remember them, at least.

At some point in the summer, my dad was let go from his job (I believe he was working at TwinPak). He found a new one at Zircatec in Port Hope.

I spent about a month of Grade 3 at Our Lady of Fatima in Brantford and then the excitement of moving struck. I don't know when the actual event happened but I suspect it was on the Thanksgiving long weekend. I do remember being very excited for getting a couple extra days off from school for my birthday.

Our first night in the new house, the one my parents have been in and I've regularly returned to over the past 20 years, was an adventure.

My parents told me years later that the movers got lost on the way here so we spent the night without our stuff. We slept in sleeping bags in the living room. I'd never spent much time in the country before. There was a smell in the air. Mum told me it was manure.

I started at North Hope Central Public School (disaffectionately referred to as 'No Hope'). I had a hard time making new friends. I was the strange, new kid. I came from the city with university-educated parents. My classmates had been living and working these lands for generations.

20 years on and I've only just recently started to appreciate this area and the things it has to offer.

One good thing about 1982 - I had discovered MTV, and as the Top 40 AM radio that I had been raised on was dying, suddenly here was the next big thing. Video did kill the radio star. And for the first time in my life, I wanted to go see shows.

so this is the show where the youngsters get to hear us moldy oldies reminisce...

I was in high school. Grade 10, I think.

I was still fiercely independent in my music listening habits. Thank the gods for Muchmusic, which brought something other than the mainstream FM radio into my home. Although my older brother would've still be at home then, so I was provided another avenue into new music that way as well.

Some bands I was into in '82:

Jane Siberry - thought she was weird when I first saw the video for Mimi on the Beach, but then my brother came home with a copy of the Speckless Sky, which was pretty great.

Psychedelic Furs, Dream Syndicate, Joe Jackson - some great 80s guitar rock, although different styles. Still listen to them a lot today, although by '82 Joe Jackson had moved into more jazz-pop stuff instead of his post-punk sound (Steppin' Out was in '82)

Men Without Hats, DEVO, Gary Numan, Simple Minds and a few other synth bands. Keep in mind that in '82 this was pretty "out there" stuff. Seems commonplace now, but not then

@kirk that's because i'm so awesome I started to go off the screen!

@rusty well, because it was outside, he ended up using the flaming lips LED screen (!!!) but it was TOTALLY messed up. not only was it all wacky and scribbly, they told him last minute that in order for it to work he had to flip the entire video, which he did not have time to do.

So I don't really know what the ones at the park said... :(

but that's when I gave him my cake!

1982 = I was living on Texada Island, barely going to grade five, making money picking mushrooms and rolling for people. Luckily for me I turned that around when school went back in in the fall and i had a teacher that inspired me.

I was still listening to my Moms folk music plus into Peter Gabriel, Supertramp.

I am one of the many people turning 30 this fall so we will jump to 1992...

I was 10 and my family moved for the forth time in my short life. Constantly having to make new friends pretty much beat the precociousness out of me and that was the year I turned to quiet hobbies like gardening (snap peas!), reading (The Hobbit!), and my pet rabbit (Snuffkin!). I lived in Victoria until last year, but 1992 was the year we moved to Cook Street Village, a neighborhood I love to this day. Also, that was the year I met my best friend. We have been friends for 2/3 or our lives this year!

Music - what my hippy parents listened to: Marley, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, Billy Brag, Laurie Anderson, Bowie, Talking Heads, and that growly guy whose name escapes me.

I can totally empathize, Grant! I lived in Hong Kong for three years. The summers were so hot and humid that I had to carry around a travel bottle of baby powder in my shorts pocket wherever I went. Part of my daily routine was finding somewhere I could take a quick break and apply the powder without anyone seeing me. The back of the bus worked well ...

'82 was a most excellent year... the year of my birth! So not doing too much listening or dancing.

Now '92 on the other hand, boy... I distinctly remember one of the smartest and nerdiest guys in our class coming out on stage for the "talent show" and lip synching to "I'm too sexy". Wow. Still blows my mind. But proof: can't judge a book! Meanwhile, my friend made me a mixed tape of excellent tune like the Under the Bridge, Summertime and even a bit of C+C Music factory. Had to listen when mom wasn't around!

Hi Blog

In 1982 I turned 4. It was a tumultuous year for me. My parents were at the tail end of a nasty divorce and the divorce judge gave custody of my brother to my father and custody of me to my mother. Together with my soon-to-be step-father we packed up and left Bathurst, NB for Kenora, ON where we would live until 1986. I only knew french and there were no french schools so I was thrust into kindergarten not knowing a word of English. Now I can barely speak a word of french!

I remember driving around in my mother's brown 1978 Chevy Impala or my step-dad's 1978 Mazda 626. Everything else is pretty fuzzy.

In 1982 I was five. I was living on a farm in rural Ontario. (stouffville to be exact) I was starting school. I'm sure i was getting into trouble for disrupting the class. I was an only child and relied heavily on imaginary people and places as I lived with no other children nearby. My father (who was a single parrent) was a huge music fan and had an extensive music collection. I remember hearing a lot of Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel/Genesis, and lots of other classic rock albums. I had a cat named Frank and a dog named Chienva ("go dog" in french). I liked to play with lego.

I wish i was five again.

In 1982 (when not representing for all the gangsters all across the world):

I was a year old. My memories of this time are hazy at best but I'm told I lived in Belnan, NS in a little bungalow my parents had just built. It was right by the Nine Mile River which, a few years later, is where I learned to skate (like the wind). [side note: I've never measured the distance of the Nine Mile River so I can't confirm it's length in relation to it's name.]

1992...

I was 11, I could skate like the wind by this point of my life (I was already on the Montreal Canadiens roster in my head). My family had just moved to Truro from Baddeck, NS. M best friend Corey and I used to play road hockey everyday and then draw up imaginary rosters of imaginary hockey teams complete with imaginary stats. (I guess I was pretty into hockey.) Robin Hood Prince of Thieves came out around this time... I saw it at the theater (Truro actually had a theater!) Musically, I was into Alice Cooper, Aerosmith and other emabaressing things. It would be either 1992 or 1993 that I found Nirvana and all that "grunge" stuff that I so loved and that formed my musical opinions. Columbia House Tape Company or whatever it was called was my gateway to a lot of music.

Oh! The Blue JAys won the World Series in 1992 - that was HUGE. I remember staying up super late with my dad, brother and the aforementioned Corey watching the Jays win it all. Oh the glory years.

Going at this another way, what was I doing at 14: It was 1968, and I was going to anti-war demos and rallies in solidarity with the growing civil rights movement. Musically, I was listening to and going to shows with Credence, the Band, Traffic, the Grateful Dead, the Allman Bros., James Taylor, Cream, and the Moody Blues.

Further to #19, which covered my 1982 doings with Canadian authors and books, locally I was a devoted fan of a terrific blues musician, Mr. Stress, who was resident two nights a week at Cleveland's Euclid Tavern, a storied music venue. For anyone interested, I recently wrote a recollection of Mr. Stress and the Euclid Tavern, linked to here.

I was not born in 1982, I was born in 1992, but I was only 5 then. I was living in Edmonton and at that time I was really into trucks and dinosaurs. My tastes weren't too developed at that time. I liked Sharon Lois and Brahm mostly. However, I did also like the Who. My dad classically conditioned me and my sisters to like the who by always playing Who's Next when we played a certian game with a toy ball.

1982, I was born, in LR 501 thuglife baby...as for Aucoin, my lovely wife orchestrated an amazing 30th birthday gift in which Rich was playing up in Chicago and I got to meet up with garjoh, and Rich put my wife, me, and my brother in-law in the credits, I was blown away and then to top it off I got to get up on stage and play drums with Rich. It was the first time I had been back up on stage after my band days. I forgot/or was reminded of how AWESOME it feels to be back on stage. I hope that one day I get back up there

1992: Pretty sure I was starting preschool. Or I was hanging out with my nanny Christine (weird how after all these years I can still remember her name and her face. Hilariously, her name was Christine and she had crazy curly hair). I was in Winnipeg, living in a sweet house in a neighborhood called Westwood. Around this time in my life I also wore a Barbie dress daily.

Grant: I would agree with that statement you made about Al Tuck! If it wasn't for the likes of you and Vish, and CBC R3 I wouldn't know of him, other than that he was on Murderrecords back in the day. I feel the same say about your brother-in-law's friend Doug Paisley. His songs feel so heartwrenching/heartfelt/moving to me, more so than probably any other Canadian artist, and you most people don't even know who he is!

in 1982, i was six, listening to the american graffiti album, french folk songs, harry belafonte, and bobbi vinton (the polka album). my taste in music has always been diverse.

i was also in kindergarten, afternoon class. everyday, my nanny and i would take the main st. bus downtown, have scones and apple juice at the Bay, then bus to my school for class. good times!!!!

@Benoit, 145: I like his interviews. but definitely very smarmy.

The thing that did it for me was at the Polaris Gala one year he was introducing one of the nominees. All of the other presenters used notes, kept it short and sweet, while sufficiently lauding the artist. Jian tried to go off the cuff (but failed to do so), and spoke seemingly forever in an exteremly pretentious and grandiolquent way that made it seem as if his goal was to focus more attention on himself than on the artist he was presenting. every since then I can't stand his long-winded intros in his interviews. he's got a gift for asking questions though, I'll give him that.

Neuromancer - I read one of his books on my vacation and the stories/chapters about his art school days were hilarious. I love never knowing what is true in his stories. I liked when he went into his new friend's apartment and the only furniture is a nest of human hair. His response? "Nice nest."

1982

I was 21 and living and working and taking some classes in Hinton, Alberta. A friend and I had moved there together in 1980 and would soon go our separate ways.

As far as music I was working in a live music venue and got to listen to a great variety of music from touring bands from that time period.

Listening to artists like Billy Idol, The Clash, The Police, Jackson Browne, Billy Joel.......

Neuromancer - Yes! I couldn't remember the title. That entire book was great. Learning French, working as a personal assistant and a mover, doing all the drugs. Oh! replacing booze with tea and becoming an insomniac. The face cream that makes you look 20, but not if you had plastic surgery. Finding out you have the IQ of a broom.

i saw the Police and the English Beat, same tour in '82, at a place called Castle Farms in around Charlevoix (NW) Mich. the English Beat was phenomenal, but the Police had the volume cranked up so loud that it hurt (literaly) and was distorted, didn't sound good from where i was (about 20 rows back).

that night we survived a ride with John Guba driving / flying w lights off at 2:00 a.m. down the winding ridge of Old Mission Penninsula. pure stupidity

I think Jian is very generous with his definition of New Wave. I wouldn't consider the synth pop stuff to be New Wave. I think of New Wave as the post-punk sound, like Boomtown Rats, Blondie, Talking Heads, Joe Jackson...all bands that still used guitars and real drums

IN ADORABLE NEWS:

Johnny Andrews (who was playing drums with Hey Ocean on Sunday in Victoria) had his young nephews on stage with the band during the show. One was playing the drums alongs with him (soooo cute) and the other, Owen, came out during Make A New Dance Up, and played the tambo...

THEN BREAK DANCED.

It was amazing. I have a bit of video of it. It will be on YouTube sometime soon...soon to be watched by a million bronies.

1982 - my parents were having their second child, still blissfully unaware they would have a third by mistake, and need to have me to cancel out the mistake ... my mom didn't want any middle children so she thought 2 middle kids was a better idea

1992 - i graduated from kindergarden. and gave ther performance of the year telling people in french to watch and listen to our play that most of them didn't understand cause it was in french haha

@CMac I have seen Rich Aucoin MANY times. I saw him play in the corner of a Greek restaurant on Main Street, playing solo and dressed in a Grinch costume, and then get on his bike and pedal to Calgary. Myself and Chris Kelly were at the show. Period.

"In a BBC interview,[2] Eric Stewart told how the song began as a bossa nova version, but was ditched by the band after Kevin Godley and Lol Creme dismissed it as "crap". Although the band moved on to record "One Night in Paris", they noticed that studio staff were still walking around singing "I'm Not in Love". Stewart recalled: "I looked at Graham (Gouldman), and I said that song's a hit, you know. I don't know what's going on here, but I think we got to try it again. And blow me down, Kevin came up with the idea. He said, 'Let's do something very different. Now let's do a whole track and the whole backing track is voices.'"

The song, once complete, became instrumental in 10cc's launch to international fame. According to Stewart, the band was already being courted by Phonogram to leave Jonathan King's UK Records label and sign a new deal. He said: "I rang them. I said come and have a listen to what we've done, come and have a listen to this track. And they came up and they freaked, and they said, 'This is a masterpiece. How much money, what do you want? What sort of a contract do you want? We'll do anything.' On the strength of that one song, we did a five-year deal with them for five albums and they paid us a serious amount of money.""

Well, this is indeed a treat, both of my children are in town, and I guess I'm taking them out to lunch. :) Brandon flew down from Seattle to attend a wedding in Orange County, and he's now in town. Brittney is of course, here before moving to Peru in November. And to fit in with the question, Brandon was born in 1984, Britt in 1986.

Also, something Grant briefly alluded to, for folks who think Jian may have talked too long, telling his story about losing his Adidas bag, I don't agree. That's a helluva tale--I mean having your own property flung up in to the middle of the communal experience, at such a nearly violent moment? And not getting it back? I think that's a big deal and I didn't mind Jian building up to it like I agree he did.

I think impatience with stories like that, while kinda common, is too much. Like reflexively groaning at puns. C'mon, give yourself to a storytelling, it may turn out worthwhile! Stay neutral, lean positive--those are my watchwords.

Haha Grant. Yes it was the federally funded program for youth that was cut this year and pronounced as Shonica has it. No it didn't work and I almost got kicked out of the program. I got to experience military court and then my punishment was 3 days hanging out with the reg military guys in which I snuck off base with one of and partied and then snuck back on to base. That "punishment" was a whole lot of fun.
