CBC Radio’s A Propos host Jim Corcoran and singer-songwriter Caracol both hail from Sherbrooke, Que. That’s where A Propos headed to record the two in conversation, right before one of Caracol’s concerts in her hometown last spring.

Caracol is a gifted singer-songwriter who initially performed with worldbeat duo DobaCaracol, before moving on to a solo career. She just released her second solo album, Blanc Mercredi, as well as a digital EP compilation of her songs in English, entitled Shiver. Caracol recently toured across Canada in double bill concerts with Amelia Curran.

Caracol’s song “Quelque part,” featured in the film Starbuck, won a Genie Award for best original song, quite an amazing outcome for a song written in a few hours. In her conversation with Corcoran, Caracol describes how this song came about. And when she heard Corcoran’s translation of her lyrics, she found them even more touching in English than her own in French.

Here is the excerpt where Caracol tells the story behind the song “Quelque part,” followed by Corcoran’s translation of the lyrics. Caracol and her musicians then perform the song in front of a live Sherbrooke audience.
