Today is Polaris Music Prize Long List Announcement Day! Today the 40-album long list will be rolled out in Vancouver at The Waldorf Hotel, the first time the nominees have been announced outside of Toronto. Starting at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET, Dave Shumka and I will be broadcasting live from the heart of the action at the Waldorf!
Now in its seventh year, the Polaris Music Prize celebrates albums of the highest artistic integrity, without regard to musical genre, professional affiliation or sales history. It is adjudicated by selected music journalists, broadcasters and bloggers from across Canada.
Previous winners have included Owen Pallett/Final Fantasy (2006), Patrick Watson (2007), Caribou (2008), F***ed Up (2009), Karkwa (2010) and Arcade Fire (2011). But who will win the $30,000 Polaris Prize this year? We will be closer to finding that out today!
At 11 a.m. PT, you’ll be hearing the long list live as it is announced. Past nominees Hannah Georgas, Dan Mangan and Veda Hille will be announcing the list, along with Polaris juror and Vancouver Sun music writer Francois Marchand.
We look forward to your comments. Bring on the debates!
Next week we announce the Polaris Prize pool; perhaps start figuring your short list predictions. Also, here are some future Polaris dates to remember:
:: Short list announcement: Tuesday, July 17 at the Drake Hotel in Toronto. The top 10 titles are revealed.
:: Polaris Prize Gala: Monday, Sept. 24 at the Masonic Temple Concert Hall in Toronto. One Canadian album will win $30,000.
Thanks for tuning in, congrats to the nominees, and happy arguing!
